Looking back at 2007

January •Jackson Academy's Kayla Coleman and Bailey Pringle signed scholarships to play softball at Alabama Southern Community College along with Jackson High School's Lynn Porter.

February •Jackson High School knocked off Escambia County 76-69 to win the 4A Region 1 area title. •Demarquis Besteda signed a letter of intent to play football for the University of West Alabama.

March •Jackson High School takes over as the number one ranked team in Class 4A. •The Jackson Lady Aggies win the Tombigbee Tournament with six wins in two days. •The McIntosh Demon girl's basketball team won their second straight Class 1A state championship with a 79-67 win over Hazlewood in the state tournament.

April •Jackson High School wins the 4AArea 1 crown with a win over Monroe County. •The Leroy Bears softball team knocked off the Fruitdale Pirates and the Washington County Bulldogs to win the 2007 Washington County Tournament.

May •The Leroy Bears win the Class 2A baseball championship with a two-game sweep over the Hatton Hornets. •Leroy, Washington County and Millry all head to Montgomery to battle for state championships in baseball. Jackson falls to Trinity Presbyterian in the third round of the baseball playoffs to end their season with a 27-11 record.

June •Jackson High School hires Tony Johnson as new defensive coordinator. •South Alabamian defeated Fire Department 16-3 to take the Little League baseball championship. •Chris Sherman returns to Jackson to become sports writer at The South Alabamian.

July •Joe Nettles takes over at Washington County High School after Brian Jones resigned after just three months on the job. •The Jackson 14-year-old Dixie League All-Stars make their first trip to the state championship. •Mike Garrett takes over at Jackson Academy after serving as assistant for the last few years.

August •Football practice gets underway despite record heat. •Jackson High School's volleyball team gets ready for first season of action. •The Jackson Academy junior varsity cheerleaders win 2007 West Medium Squad State Championship. •The University of Alabama football team held it s annual "Fan Day" in front of 9,000 fans trying to get a glimpse of new coach Nick Saban.

September •The Auburn Tigers fell to 1-2 on the year with a 19-14 loss to Mississippi State on the Plains. •The Leroy Bears held on for a 30-28 win over the Jackson Aggies at Palmer Stadium in Leroy. •A ceremony was held at halftime of the Jackson Academy- Patrician Academy game to retire the jersey of a late student, Stephen Ray Carpenter who played for the Eagles' football team, most notably the 1979 team.

October •The Alabama Crimson Tide routed the Tennessee Volunteers 41-14 to improve to 6-2 on year. •Clarke County High School hands Coach John Blackmon's Aggies a heartbreaking 22-21 loss in the 91st meeting between the two schools. •Whitney Smith was named Miss Football 2007 at Leroy High School.

November •The magical season for the Clarke County High School Bulldogs came to an end last Friday as they fell 20-7 to the Eagles of Calera in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state playoffs. •The Washington County Bulldogs have started the season on fire in basketball as the 3A Bulldogs went to Mobile on Nov. 19 and came away with the top spot in the UMS Wright Invitational Tournament with a 43-41 victory over UMS Wright. •Auburn knocked off the Crimson Tide 21-14 for the six straight Iron Bowl victory. •Jackson High School's Kent Meyer signed his letter of intent Wednesday, Nov. 14, to play baseball for the University of Alabama at the Jackson High School Library. •Former Jackson Aggie star Demond Williams signed a contract to play for the Tri-Cities Fever of the Arena Football League 2. •Jackson High School and Aggie Coach John Blackmon have decided to part ways following a tough '07 season. •The Millry Wildcats finished up a perfect 10-0 regular season with a 28-26 win over rival Washington County in Chatom. •Jamesha Johnson was named Homecoming Queen at Jackson High School. •All five Washington County schools make the Alabama High School Athletic Association's playoffs.

December •Clint Moseley and the Leroy Bears (14-1) rallied for two fourth quarter touchdowns to knock off the previously unbeaten Fyffe Red Devils (14-1) 25-20 to win their second straight state championship. •Leroy junior quarterback Clint Moseley was named the Class 2A Back of the Year Tuesday, Dec. 11, by the Alabama Sports Writers Association during its annual banquet at Birmingham- Southern College. •Jackson High School named former Satsuma coach Jeff Kelly as the new Aggies' head football coach Tuesday at Jackson High School. The former Southern Miss and Seattle Seahawks quarterback has been at 6A Satsuma for the last four years compiling a 15-25 record during that span. •Laken Harvey drained a buzzer beater to knock off Pickens Academy 46-44 and win the Southern Academy Tournament Saturday in Greensboro.
