Jackson family believes in miracles thanks to son's amazing progress
The son of Tiffany and Robert Hicks of Jackson, Cole, who was 2 when the incident occurred, was pulled from a pool at a day care, March 8, by Jackson Police Officer Carey Slayton, who immediately administered CPR. A short time earlier, Alabama State Trooper Darrell Linder had arrived on the scene and had rescued John Thomas Atchison from the pool. Atchison, the son of Lori and Chip Atchison, who was not underwater as long as Hicks, returned home about two weeks after the incident, but Hicks remained critical for sometime after that. Following a 31-day stay at the University of South Alabama's Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile, Hicks was recommended for treatment at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's (UAB) Children's Hospital and was placed under the care of Dr. Charles Law. The family almost immediately began to see some improvement in their son after he returned home April 19. Since then his improvements have been nothing short of astounding. "He continues to make progress every day," said Tiffany Hicks recently. "He now rolls over and is able to sit up on his own. He even tries to talk." Cole has been undergoing an hour of physical therapy three days a week. Mrs. Hicks said the decision has been made to increase that to more intense threehour sessions four days per week. "This has been a really challenging year for us," she said. "We are thankful for the outpouring of support we have received from the community. We wish everyone a merry Christmas and a lovely holiday season." Mrs. Hicks went on to say that the doctors at UAB are amazed by Cole's improvements. "They don't say much, they are just in awe," she said. Cole's brother, Austin and sister, Briana both said they are overjoyed that their little brother is getting better. "We're glad we can play with him," said Briana.
Mrs. Hicks said she can tell Cole loves the attention as well. "He loves to get praised when he accomplishes a goal," she said smiling.
