2008 Girl Scout cookie sale begins Jan. 11

The Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama will begin accepting pre-orders for cookies Friday, Jan. 11 through Sunday, Jan 27. The girls will be taking orders for Thin Mints, Samoas, All Abouts, Do-Si-Dos, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Lemon Chalet Cremes and Sugar-free Chocolate Chip cookies at $3.50 per box. Cookies are scheduled for delivery Feb. 12- 16.

In compliance with FDA regulations, the cookies are now available with zero trans fat.

The Girl Scout cookie program is an integral part of Scouting's business and economic literacy initiative for girls ages 6-17. It helps by providing finance, marketing and public speaking skills, along with valuable experiences that build self-confidence and develop leadership style.

One-hundred percent of the proceeds are used locally benefiting Girl Scouts through services, education and program activities. This year, with the public's help, girls will be taking part in a service project. They will be asking customers to purchase at least one extra box of cookies to share with someone who is unable to purchase them.

"Gift of Caring" packages will be delivered in their communities to senior centers, women's and children's shelters, food banks, family crisis and abuse centers and other charity organizations. They will also be accepting "Gift of Caring" packages for servicemen and women still serving overseas. Each troop determines which organization or charity it will support.
