Elderly man dies in fire near St. Stephens
Cecil Loper, 82, was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County Coroner Shane Thornton shortly after 4 a.m. Loper's son, Rodney Loper, managed to exit the residence, which was completely destroyed. According to St. Stephens Fire Chief Bo Roney, his department was paged out around 1 a.m. When they arrived on the scene, the house, located at 15575 County Road 34, was fully engulfed. Roney said the department's pumper and tanker trucks were used to battle the blaze for about four hours. Frankville and Leroy fire departments each assisted with their pumper and tanker trucks, with Hobson responding with its tanker.
The exact cause of death was unknown at press time, pending an autopsy by the Alabama Department of Forensics. Monday, the cause of the fire was being investigated by Fire Marshal Gary Cartee of Foley. Approximately 20 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. "All the departments involved in battling the blaze worked very well together," said Roney. "They supplied plenty of water and worked diligently to put it out. I would like to thank them tremendously for all they did."
Both of the Loper's vehicles were also lost in the fire.
