Landon Hilt was chosen as the Jackson Fire Department's Firefighter of the Year during its annual Christmas banquet, Dec. 10, at the downtown fire station.

Hilt, who has been with the department approximately seven years, said he was totally surprised as well as honored by receiving the distinction. "I never would have guessed it was me," he said. "Chief Bradley was up there reading off all of these things about the honoree and I never suspected it was me at all."

Hilt serves as a lieutenant on Truck 5, which is the department's ladder truck housed at the north fire station. "Harold Everhart and Daron Bolen are my captains and are two of the great- est guys I've ever known," he said. "Everyone in our department is great. I am proud to be associated with this fine group of volunteers. I encourage others to consider becoming volunteer firefighters because it is a great way to serve your community."

William Brown (center) was named Junior Firefighter of the year.
With his new job as a teacher and assistant coach at Jackson High School, along with his time spent volunteering with the fire department, Hilt manages to squeeze a little time in to enjoy life with his wife, Leslie, and their two daughters, Jilly, 8 and Maddy, 5. When he's not doing that, he enjoys hunting and golfing.
