JPD warns of check scam The Jackson Police Department is warning area residents about a new mail fraud check scam currently circulating. According to Deputy Chief Mark Harrell, people are receiving letters supposedly confirming that they have won $38,000 from a company known as "Reward Program of North America." The letter contains an authentic looking check for $3,800, which appears to be issued by Wells Fargo. "Those receiving the bogus checks are asked to deposit them in their accounts and write a check back to the sender in order to receive their prize," said Harrell. "They use names of reputable retailers such as Wal- Mart, Home Depot and Sears in the letters to make it appear more authentic." The deputy chief said a telephone number is provided in the correspondence, but calls are answered by someone with a foreign accent. "They are usually put on hold and the operator never returns," he added. Harrell said anyone receiving such letters in the mail are urged not to deposit the checks and immediately contact the Jackson Police Department. "This is definitely a scam," he said. "As you well know, you never get something for nothing. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is." Jackson men charged following raid Two Jackson men face several charges following the execution of a search warrant residence on East Ross Street Friday, Dec. 14. According to Chief Charles Burge, Jackson Police officers and agents from the First Judicial Drug Task Force (Task Force One) executed a search warrant around 7:05 p.m. at the residence of Earnest Gaston, 49, of Jackson. Gaston had been suspected of ongoing drug activity. During the search, officers located a pipe believed to be used for smoking crack cocaine. Gaston was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Johnny T. Anderson, 55, of Jackson was also arrested during the operation. He was charged with failure to obey officers and resisting arrest.
Both men were booked into the Clarke County Jail.
