Area Obituaries Coma L. "Pee Wee" Hoven Coma L. "Pee Wee" Hoven, a native and resident of Jackson, died Dec. 6, 2007 at his residence at the age of 79. He was a retired owner of Hoven Auto Sales and a member of Stave Creek Baptist Church of Jackson, as well as the American Legion Post No. 85. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He is survived by a son, Marty (Donna) Hoven of Demopolis; a daughter, Susan Hoven of Jackson; a brother, Dorsey Fait Hoven of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Lizzie H. Sheffield and Marie H. Young, both of Jackson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were Dec. 8 at Stave Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Maloy officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing. Pallbearers will be Bill Taylor, David Rikard, Charles Little, Don Lolley, Jeremy Rikard and Norman "Buzz" Jordan. Johnnie Irvin Jackson Johnnie Irvin Jackson, 83, died Dec. 8, 2007 at his residence in Coffeeville at the age of 83. He was a native and resident of Jackson. A self-employed logger and farmer, he was a member of Grace Chapel in Coffeeville. A tail gunner on the B-17 bombers in WWII, he was veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Survivors include four sons, Larry Jackson of Aquilla, Donald Jackson, Willie Jackson and Charles Jackson, all of Coffeeville; a daughter, Barbara Silda of Moselle, Miss.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Dec. 10 at Grace Chapel with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Clayton Gray Frowner Clayton Gray Frowner, 63, a lifelong resident of the Manila community of Jackson, died Dec. 4, 2007 at his sister's home in Alma. He was preceded in death by his parents the Rev. Ellis C. and Mary Ann Frowner. He was a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and was a deacon. He was president of the Progressive Club of Alma, Manila and Gainestown; served as president of the Honey Bees Community Club; president of the Sunday School Annual; and secretary of the Manila Hunting Club, of which he helped to organize. Frowner also served as assistant fire chief and treasurer of the Alma Fire Department. He was a member of White Hall Lodge No. 951 F&AM of Alabama where he served as Senior Warden for many years; St. Peter Lodge No. 629, the Royal Arch; was a Worthy Patron of L.D. Williams Pride Chapter No. 730 OES; and served as a Clarke County Commissioner, District 4, from Jan. 18, 1993 until Nov. 13, 2000. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Survivors include a son, Maple L. Hunt of Gainestown; three sisters, Edna Williams of Alma, Mary Lee Kirksey of South Holland, Ill. and Novetter B. Files of Glenwood, Ill; seven brothers, the Rev. Webster (Beverly) Frowner of Kansas City, Kan., Jessie Frowner of Chicago, Ill., John Max (Alice) Frowner and the Rev. Henry (Martha) Frowner, both of Manila, David (Aretha) Frowner, Phillip (Annie) Frowner and Bennie Frowner, all of Alma. Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 8, at St. Matthew No. 1 Baptist Church. Viewing was from 11 a.m. until the funeral service. The Masonic ceremony was performed. There will be a military service at the graveside with burial in the Frowner Cemetery in Manila. Obituaries from other mortuaries James Holan Evans James Holan Evans, a Monroeville native, Frisco City resident and former Clarke County resident, died Dec 11, 2007 in Monroeville at the age of 64. He was a member and deacon of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Frisco City and a member of the Excel Masonic Lodge. Evans worked in the maintenance department at Alabama River Pulp. His parents Almos L. Evans Jr. and Mrs. Boyd Eulene Evans preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Elsie Evans of Frisco City; a son, James H. (Connie) Evans II of Mexia; three daughters, Tina Evans (Eddie) Upton and Kimberly Evans, both of Frisco City, and Hollie Evans (Eddie) Snow of Uriah; a sister, Lenora Evans (Aubrey) Tatum of Atmore; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Dec. 13 at the Monroe Chapel Funeral Home in Monroeville with the Revs. Randy Davis, Matthew Davis and Clayton Barnes officiating. Interment was in the Baas Memorial Cemetery in Frisco City. Mary Bird Granade Mary Bird Chapman Granade, a resident of Cleveland, Tenn., died Dec. 6, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Will S. Chapman and husband John James Granade. She is survived by a brother, Bill (Nancy) Chapman of Atmore; children Karen (Larry) Hardesty, Donna (Tom) McAdams, Sally (Mike) Fagan and Lisa (Mark) Swaffar; grandchildren, Larry and Josie Hardesty, Will and Dixie Hardesty, Rob and Jill Hardesty, Lindsay and Madison Williams, John and Kristen McAdams, Jeff and Janessa McAdams, Kelly Fagan, Casie and David Cox, Michael Fagan, Mary Caitlan and Daniel Swaffar; great-grandchildren, Devin, Maddie, Zach, Josh, Mason and Ellie Hardesty, Jack McAdams and Koen Fagan. Services were Dec. 8, 12 p.m. at the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland with the Revs. Andy Ferguson and Debbie Stokes officiating. Interment was Sunday, Dec. 9 in the Leroy Baptist Church Cemetery with Scott Little officiating. Ronald Luzell Bumpers Ronald Luzell Bumpers, 56, a native of Winn and resident of Leroy, died Dec. 8, 2007 at the Jackson Medical Center in Jackson. He was employed as a chemical operator for Ciba in McIntosh and was a member of Berry's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Winn. He is survived by his wife, Velma Robinson Bumpers of Leroy; one son, Reginald Robinson of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Angel (Brandon) Goulding of Salt Lake City, Utah; two grandchildren; his mother, Sweetie Mae Bumpers Law of Jackson; a sister, Helen (Collin) Calhoun of Grove Hill; and two brothers, Arnold (Annie) Bumpers and Donald (Anette) Bumpers, both of Winn. Funeral services are today, Dec. 13, at the Berry's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Winn. Interment will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery of Jackson with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Gregory Jerrod Chapman Gregory Jerrod Chapman died in a car accident on Dec. 8, 2007 at the age of 40. He was a native of Toddtown and a resident of Mascotte, Fla. Chapman was a member of the graduating class of 1985 at Clarke County High School in Grove Hill and Pine Chapel No. 2 Baptist Church in Toddtown. His survivors include his mother, Lovie C. Barney of Toddtown; one sister, Marilyn (Richard) Burrell of Toddtown; three brothers, Michael (Mary) Chapman of Jackson, Carl (Barbara) Chapman of Mobile and Thomas Chapman of Leesburg, Fla.; a companion, Kiwanis Law of Mascotte; two adopted daughters, Preshetta (Terrel) Davis of Leesburg and Kawanita (Michael) Thornton of Mascotte; three adopted sons, Daniel Law, Travis Chappell and James (Brittaney) Chappell, all of Mascotte; and eight adopted grandchildren. Services will be Saturday, Dec. 15 at 12 noon from the Pine Chapel No. 2 Baptist Church in Toddtown. Interment will follow in the Pine Chapel Cemetery of Toddtown with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Flora Mae Hunter Flora Mae Jones Hunter, 86, a native of Sweet Water and a resident of Jackson, died at the University Hospital in Tampa, Fla. on Dec. 4, 2007 at the age of 86. She was a graduate of Alabama State University and a retired educator. A member of the Star Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Sweet Water, she was under watch care at Mt. Olive No. 2 Baptist Church of Jackson. Survivors include one son, Pastor Gregory (Debora) Powe of Tampa,; one sister, Johnnie (Wilkerson) Sewell of Sweet Water; one brother, Clifford (Charlene) Jones of Jackson; and four grandchildren. Services were Dec. 12 from the Star Bethel Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. John Wright, pastor and Pastor Gregory Powe, officiating minister. Interment followed in the Antioch Cemetery of Nicholsville with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Dan James Jr. Dan James Jr., a native of Sunflower and resident of Jackson, died at the age of 76 on Dec. 9, 2007 at his home. He was a retired saw operator for C.E. Harrell Logging of Sunflower. He is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline D. James and Van (James) Gaston, both of Jackson, Shirley (Lonnie) Campbell of Mobile and Sonya (Terry) Stewart of Texas; two sons, Clifton James and Albert (Ella) James, both of Jackson; two brothers, Jessie James of Sunflower and Samuel James of Indiana; one sister, Atlean Brown of Sunflower; one adopted sister, the Rev. Georgia Nash of Choctaw Bluff; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Saturday, Dec. 15, 1:30 p.m. until the 2:30 funeral hour at the Inspirational Tabernacle Church in Jackson. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
