Leroy tops ACA 42-35
Clint Moseley's 60-yard bomb to Patrick Rivers sends Bears back to Birmingham
By Chris Sherman SA Sports Writer

Clint Moseley threw a 60- yard touchdown pass to Patrick Rivers with 38 seconds left to lift the Leroy Bears to a 42-35 victory over American Christian Academy in the Class 2A semifinals Friday night in Tuscaloosa.

Moseley had possibly his best night of the year as the junior threw for 301 yards and a touchdown on 15-28 passing while adding 164 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown for the Bears. He has thrown for 3,012 yards on 159-253 attempts with 23 touchdowns to only five interceptions. He has added 701 yards rushing and 11 more touchdowns on the ground to make him the most prolific quarterback to ever play in Clarke, Washington and Choctaw counties.

After a scoreless first quarter, ACA and Leroy found their rhythm on offense as neither defense had an answer. The Patriots found the end zone first when University of Alabama commitment Brad Smelley scored from 3 yards out to put ACA on top 6-0. Blake Brenton was perfect on his PAT and with 11:30 to go in the first half the Patriots led 7- 0.

Moseley took control on the Bears' ensuing possession carrying the ball twice for 59 yards including a 42-yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7 following Paul Gartman's point after.

The Leroy defense stepped up and held the Patriots to a three-and-out to give the ball back to the Leroy offense. Detrick "D-Train" Powell capped off a long drive with a 6-yard touchdown. Gartman's PAT gave the Bears a 14-7 lead with 6:01 to go in the half.

Smelley answered the call hitting Johnny Shuttlesworth for a 6-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining in the first half. Brenton connected on the point after to send the game tied up 14-14 at intermission.

The Patriots' quarterback came out scorching to start the second half. Smelley hit Shuttlesworth for a 62-yard touchdown with several Leroy defenders in his face to put ACA back on top 21-14 following Brenton's PAT.

Leroy did not let up and answered the score about two minutes later when Powell bulled in from 2 yards out. Gartman nailed the PAT to tie the game 21-21 with 5:18 left in the third quarter.

Both defenses clamped down forcing several punts before Grant Brown took an ACA punt 60 yards to pay dirt to put Leroy on top 28-21 with 6:46 to go in the game. Gartman's PAT was good.

Smelley and the Patriots would not go away. The future Crimson Tider hit Scott Davis for a 4-yard touchdown with 4:51 to go in regulation. Brenton's important PAT was good to tie the game 28-28.

Leroy again appeared to give ACA the knockout punch when Michael Bracy walked in from 18-yards at the 2:16 mark in the fourth quarter. Gartman added the point after to give Leroy a seven-point advantage with little time remaining.

The ACA offense came firing right back with Smelley tossing a 31-yard scoring strike to Heath Minor to pull the Patriots to within one point at 35-34. Brenton hit the clutch PAT to knot the score 35-35 with just 53 seconds remaining.

Overtime looked like a distinct possibility but Moseley and the Bear offense had a different idea. Facing a second down- and-3 with 49 seconds left from the ACA 40-yard line, Moseley hit Rivers in stride for a 60-yard touchdown. Gartman hit the extra point attempt to Leroy up 42-25.

"I thought we might could hit a deep ball. Patrick ran a great route, and Clint made a perfect pass. It was great execution on their part," Leroy coach Danny Powell said.

Brandon Jones intercepted a Smelley pass on fourth down to seal the victory for Leroy.

The Bears (13-1) will take on the Fyffe Red Devils (14-0) Friday at 3 p.m. to decide the Class 2A state championship.
