Annie Mae Martin
Ruby Dean McHaney

Ruby Dean McHaney died at her residence Dec. 2, 2007 at the age of 80. She was a native of Clarke County and a resident of Jackson. A homemaker, she was a member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Bryant B. (Nita) Palmer Jr. of Brundidge; three brothers, Jimmy Pritchett of Jacksonville, Ark., Willie J. Pritchett of Gulfport, Miss. and Charles Pritchett of Jackson; a sister, Ruth Stringer of Jackson; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Dec. 5 at Forest Avenue Baptist Church in Jackson with the Rev. Don Rushing officiating. Interment was in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directing.

Active pallbearers were Dixon Greer, Doug Atchison, Bill Howell, Joe Baggett, Asberry Daffin and Ray Stringer. Honorary pallbearers were Bryant Palmer III, Lee Moseley, Johnnie Moseley and Dean Moseley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forest Avenue Baptist Church.

Willie Marse Roberts
Dorothy Stringer

Dorothy Stringer, a native of Baltimore, Ma., died Dec. 2, 2007, at the age of 92, at her residence in Coffeeville. She was a homemaker, a member of the Clarke County Historical Society, the Grove Hill Woman's Club, Garden Club in Massachusetts, past president of Augusta Georgia Woman's Club, Southborough Massachusetts Woman's Club, the Southborough Massachusetts Garden Club, Eastern Star in Massachusetts and active in the Massachusetts Extension Service. She was also a member of the West Bend Baptist Church in West Bend.

A son, Earl Gordon Stringer Jr., of Atlanta, Ga. survives her; along with three daughters, Carolyn S. Van Iderstine and Charlotte S. Matson, both of Coffeeville and Dorothy S. Anderson of Deerfield, N.H.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are today, Dec. 6, 11 a.m. at the West Bend Baptist Church. Arrangements are being conducted by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson.

Annie Mae Martin

Annie Mae Pugh Martin, a native and lifelong resident of Grove Hill, died Nov. 28, 2007 at the Grove Hill Hospital at the age of 86. She was a retired insurance agent for Unity Burial Life Insurance Company. A member of Mt. Zion No. 2 Baptist Church in Grove Hill, she served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and was treasurer of the building fund. She was also a member of the Bertha Mae Chapter No. 314.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Martin of Grove Hill; two sisters, Inez Pugh and Peola Pugh, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; three brothers, Evie Lewis Pugh and Eddie Roy (Marie) Pugh, both of Grove Hill and Fletcher Lee (Theresa) Pugh of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.; one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.

Services were Dec. 1 at the Mt. Zion No. 2 Baptist Church of Grove Hill with the Rev. Cory Pruitt, pastor and eulogist. The Eastern Star ceremony was performed in the church cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson.

Willie Marse Roberts

Willie Marse Roberts, 70, a native of DeKalb, Miss. and resident of the Good Hope community of Jackson, died Nov. 19, 2007 in a Tuscaloosa nursing facility. He was a retired auto mechanic and a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Walker Springs.

Survivors are daughter, Tiffany Roberts (Geoffrey) Gwin of Calera; five brothers, John R. (Deloris) Roberts of Philadelphia, Miss., Jerry C. (Jewel) Roberts of Atlanta, Ga., John H. (Walterine) Roberts of Southfield, Mich., and Charles R. (Marilyn) Roberts and L.C. (Evangelist Terri) Roberts, both of DeKalb, Miss.; five sisters, Martha R. Campbell, Beulah R. (Curtis) Cooley and Dorothy R. (James) McMillian, all of Detroit, Mich., Lillie R.M. (Joshua) Johnson of Philadelphia, and Evangelist Sadie R. Taylor of Bronx, N.Y.; and one granddaughter, Mia Vynie Gwin.

Services were Nov. 25 at Good Hope Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Arrangements were conducted by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson.

Cecil Barnett

Cecil Barnett, 57, a resident of Jackson, died Nov. 27, 2007 at Sea Breeze Nursing Home in Mobile. He was a member of the graduating Class of 1969 of Wilson Hall High School in Grove Hill and First Baptist Church of Whatley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia and John Barnett.

Barnett is survived by seven sisters, Geraldine Smith, Miller Dean Tarvin, Ella McCrian, Lee Robinson and Irine Hill, all of Grove Hill, Florence Robinson of Foley and Laura May Young of Whatley; and two brothers, John Lee Barnett and Raymond Dell Barnett, both of Whatley.

Funeral services were Dec. 2 at the First Baptist Church of Whatley with interment in the church cemetery. Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directed the arrangements.

Cora Jean White

Cora Jean Beckham White, 52, a resident of the Bethlehem community of Winn, died Nov. 30, 2007 at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Word of Truth Fellowship Church in Jackson. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Angel White and her parents, Bettye and Temon Williams.

Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte Sexton of Winn; a son, Willard (Deidra) White of St. Stephens; four sisters, Gloria (Johnny) Hill, Mary (Keith) Scott and Veta Hunt, all of Grove Hill and Gladys (J.D.) Rogers of Whatley; five brothers, Temon Williams Jr. and Cleveland Williams, both of Hampton, La., Willie (Jessie) Williams of Lisman, John (Barbara) Williams and Larry Williams, both of Whatley; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Winn, with viewing at 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Marcus Kelley, pastor of The Word of Truth Fellowship, will officiate with the Rev. Donald Sterling, pastor, assisting. Jackson Memorial Funeral home will be directing.
