WCHS takes UMS Invitational The Washington County Bulldogs have started the season on fire in basketball as the 3A Bulldogs went to Mobile on Nov. 19 and came away with the top spot in the UMS Wright Invitational tournament. Fairhope, McGill-Toolen, WCHS and UMS Wright participated. WCHS 43, Fairhope 41 The Bulldogs met up with the 6A Fairhope Pirates in the first game of the invitational coming away with a 43-41 victory thanks to a Brent Holcombe game-winning shot at the buzzer. WCHS trailed by 10 late in the game before Holcombe's game winner. Davin Green led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Holcombe had seven and John David Sheffield added six. WCHS 65, McGill 60 Holcombe again worked his magic, this time against the 6A Yellow Jackets. The junior's 35 points helped WCHS pull the 65-50 upset in overtime. With WCHS trailing by three points and time running out, Holcombe drained a threepointer to send the game into overtime. Green had 17 to round out the leading scorers. WCHS 43, UMS Wright 41 In the championship game, Washington County met up with the UMS Wright Bulldogs. Holcombe didn't have a buzzer beater but his two-pointer with 16 seconds left sealed the win for WCHS. Green had 11 and Sheffield chipped in with eight. Washington County coach Terry Sheffied says the outlook on the season is bright. "We knew if we played well together that we have a good group. If we stay focused we should have a good season, " Sheffield said.
Washington County played Citronelle Nov. 27 before traveling to Millry Thursday, Nov. 29.
