Garbage rates to rise The Washington County Solid Waste Authority met Nov. 26 and the entire meeting was taken up with changes that will take place in the new contract with Allied Waste and the new year with garbage pickup. It was hoped that the authority could set the new rates for 2008 at this meeting but Allied Waste had not gotten the necessary figures to the authority office staff in order for the board to make that decision. Chairman Allen Bailey suggested that the residential rates may go up by 88 cents or more, 40 cents of which will pay for Allied Waste push carts. It is hoped that the carts will eventually make it possible for a driver using a specially-equipped boom to lift one of the rolling carts, empty it and set it back down without leaving the truck. Because Allied Waste had not gotten the staff the necessary report, the authority could not set commercial or residential rates at the meeting. There was an extensive discussion about how best to notify the public about the new garbage carts as possibly after the month of January, no garbage will be picked up if not in the specified container. David Kelly, state environmental officer, estimated that at the end of this year, his office will have collect $35,000 in delinquent garbage accounts. It is believed that the carts will identify those households that are not participating (paying) in Washington County's mandatory garbage law. Commissioner HiltonRobbins expressed the desire that collection from those not paying would prevent raising rates on the paying citizens. The question arose about the new RV and trailer parks which have been created. Kelly explained that they are commercial accounts and the owner is responsible for paying and he collects from individuals who rent spaces.
The solid waste authority will meet next on Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.
