Upcoming events announced for Christmas season in Jackson
By Evan Carden SA Editor

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce and other organizations have a number of Christmas season events planned for the coming weeks.

The city will host a Christmas tree lighting ceremony Nov. 30 at 5 p.m., downtown. Pictures with Santa will be offered at the downtown fire station.

The annual Step Sing will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church this Sunday, Dec. 2, beginning at 6 p.m. The event will feature local school and church choirs performing traditional Christmas songs.

The chamber of commerce will host its annual Christmas Parade on Friday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. The theme for this year's parade is "Winter Wonderland."

There is an entry fee of $25. Those wishing to participate are asked to preregister by calling the chamber at 246- 3251. Checks should be made payable to the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Four categories will be judged during this year's parade:

1. Clubs and nonprofit organizations: Prizes of $200, $150 and $100 will be awarded to the best floats.

2. Businesses and industries: First and second place plaques will be awarded.

3. Bands: All area bands are encouraged to participate. Cash prizes of $500, $250 and $150 will be awarded.

4. Other marching groups: A first place plaque will be awarded.

Line-up for the parade will begin at 3:30 p.m., with marching groups staging in the public lot across from Doshia's Restaurant on West Church Street and floats lining up at the fourway stop at Forest Avenue and West Church Street.

The parade route will begin at Commerce and Broad streets, proceed north on College Avenue and disband at Joe M. Gillmore Elementary School. Those planning to throw candy and other items are asked not to do so until turning the corner at the red light on Commerce and Broad streets.

Those who have small children walking in the parade and feel the route is too long, should make arrangements for the children to ride in the parade and dismount to perform for the judges. No one will be allowed to dangle legs freely from the sides of floats or vehicles. Four-wheelers are strictly prohibited. Everyone should be safely inside floats and other vehicles during the entire route of the parade.

The parade judges will be at the Jackson Municipal Court building downtown. Marching groups competing should stop and perform at that location. The chamber asked that performances be kept brief, in order to avoid gaps in the parade lineup.

Winners will be announced in the following week's issue of The South Alabamian.

Home and business lighting contest

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its annual Home and Business Lighting Contest.

Judging will be conducted Dec. 13, between 6-8 p.m. In order for decorations to be judged all residential and business addresses must be registered with the chamber office by 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The following guidelines will be judged:

•Effectiveness of the lights in creating the display.

•Placement and uniformity of lights. (A very simple display that is neatly done would rate highly.).

•Use of design/color to create decorations

•Use of special lighting displays.

•Integrity and creativeness exercised in the decorations.

The judging panel will use a scoring scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best score. Prizes will be awarded for business and residential winners. The results will be published in the following issue of The South Alabamian.

Entry forms may be picked up at the chamber of commerce office, 500 Commerce Street.
