Bears tame Tigers, 39-20
Leroy received the ball first to start the game and after a 12- yard pass from Clint Moseley to Aerik Davis on a third and 8, the Bears were set up with firstand 10 at the Luverne 45. Moseley tossed a deep ball to Phillip Ervin but the Luverne defender got his hands on the ball first for an apparent interception. Ervin would have no part of it, stripping the ball from the Tiger defensive back on the way to the ground to regain possession. Instead of a turnover on the Bears' opening drive, it was first-and-goal at the 3-yard line. That play set the tone for the rest of the game. On the very next play, Bracy sprinted in from 3 yards out to put Leroy on the board first with 10:10 to go in the opening period. Paul Gartman's PAT was good for the 7-0 lead. The Leroy defense forced a quick three-and-out to give the ball back to the explosive Leroy offense. This time the Tigers' defense stood tall and forced the Bears to punt. Moseley boomed a 45-yard punt that was downed at the Luverne 10-yard line. Leroy's defense again forced a three-and-out, giving the ball to the offense at the Tiger 33-yard line. Moseley ran for 12 and 10 yards on first and second down to set the Bears up first-andgoal at the 11-yard line. Bracy scored his second of four touchdowns of the night from 5 yards out a few plays later. Gartman missed the point after but Leroy had a 13-0 lead with 5:23 to go in the first quarter. Luverne managed a first down due to a 15-yard face mask penalty on the Bears on their ensuing possession but that was all the stingy Leroy defense would allow. After a 30-yard punt, Leroy was set-up with a first-and-10 at the 27 with 3:09 still remaining in the opening stanza. Detrick "DTrain" Powell powered his way for 18 yards on first down. After an incomplete pass and a holding call, the Bears faced a second and-20 from the 35. Moseley hit Bracy out of the backfield for 22 yards and a first down at the Tiger 43 for a big conversion. On the next play, Moseley found Ervin streaking down the sideline for a 43-yard touchdown pass to put Leroy up 19-0 with 1:23 on the clock in the first quarter. Gartman's PAT was wide left. Leroy forced another threeand out to give the offense the ball back to start the second quarter. It took Moseley and company eight plays to march 70 yards that was capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Bracey to put Leroy up 26-0. Gartman's PAT was good. Luverne took over with 9:46 to in the half in need of a touchdown. It was not to be. Lawrence Powell intercepted a Chad Free pass and raced 42 yards to the Tiger 18-yard line to set up another Leroy score. Bracey found the end zone from 12 yards out for his fourth touchdown of the half. Gartman's PAT was good to give the Bears a commanding 33-0 lead with 8:00 to go in the first half. The Bears were not finished yet. Patrick Rivers intercepted another Free pass to give Leroy the ball back on the Tigers 44- yard line. With the backups in the game the Leroy offense didn't miss a beat. Jarrette Davis picked up runs of 35 and 12 yards before punching it in from 1 yard out for a 39-0 Leroy lead with 3:19 left in the first half. LHS rolled up 359 yards on offense and allowed only 39 to Luverne in the first half. In the second half, Leroy went with their younger players the whole way. Luvernes' Free scored on a 4-yard touchdown with 9:43 to go in the game to put the Tigers on the board for the first time. Michael Wallace plunged in from 3 yards out with 4:03 left in the game to cut the Leroy lead to 39-14. Tommy Cobb added the final score with time running out in the game on a 20-yard touchdown run to make the score 39-20. Moseley was 7-12 for 202 yards and a touchdown in roughly one and a half quarters for Leroy. Ervin hauled in two receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. Jarrette Davis had 67 yards on nine carries and a touchdown.
Leroy (10-1) hosts Pickens County (9-2) Friday night at Palmer Stadium in the second round of the AHSAA playoffs.
