MARK YOUR CALENDAR Literacy meeting Nov. 20 Senator Vivian Figures will be the guest speaker for the Clarke County Literacy meeting Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. The gathering will take place at the Resource Development Center of Boise at 4585 Industrial Road in Jackson. Coffeeville Big Buck Contest begins Nov. 17 The Coffeeville Big Buck Contest will begin Saturday, Nov. 17. Participants may register to enter at Southern Linc, Coffeeville Texaco or Charles Body Shop, all in Coffeeville. The weigh-station and measuring location will be Guy's Taxidermy in Coffeeville. CCERA monthly meeting The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet today, Nov. 15, at 11:45 a.m. at the New Faith Baptist Church in Coffeeville. The program will be legislative/state office. Hostesses will be Faye Cotton, Janice Cox, Kathleen Dunagan, Grace Dunigan and Lummie Dunigan. Peterman Station Arts and Crafts Festival scheduled The 24th year presentation of the arts and crafts festival, sponsored by the Peterman Historical Society, will be Saturday, Nov. 17, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in downtown Peterman. There will be more than 100 booths with wooden items, furniture, Christmas decorations, flowers, art, paintings, knives, clothing, embroidering on the spot, purses, T-shirts, cookbooks, garden ornaments and more. There will be entertainment and a variety of food throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to visit the depot and feast on hot cocoa, coffee, home baked goodies and view the vintage photos and memorabilia. For additional information call 251-564-2260. SWAIA meets Nov. 20 The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) monthly meeting and community information forum will be Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse. Focus of the evening will be two-part. First the nuts and bolts of establishing a community (countywide) Parents, Teachers and Students Association in Clarke, Washington and/or other interested surrounding counties. An organization of this type will bring to the forefront educational issues that are important to the entire community, such as full funding for education, child-related programs, quality teachers and the capability for schools to thrive. A copy of parents' rights under the No Child Left Behind Act will be made available to all participants in attendance. The second part of the evening will include information regarding the annual enrollment and/or plan changes in the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, Medicare Part D for senior citizens and/or individuals under 65 who are covered under Medicare disability. The enrollment period is Nov. 15 - Dec.31 for qualified individuals. 'Dress & Feed the Needy' campaign at Downtown Inn Hotel Clothes, shoes and nonperishable foods will be collected at the Downtown Inn Hotel Saturday, Nov. 24, 8 a.m. - 12 noon. Narcotics Anonymous meeting Narcotics Anonymous will be meeting Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Church St., Jackson. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are conducted in the fellowship hall of Visitation Catholic Church, West Clinton Street in Jackson Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m. Diabetes Classes Diabetes classes will be conducted each Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Jackson Medical Center. Heart of Dixie Collectors Club meets last Monday of month The Heart of Dixie Collectors Club will meet the last Monday of every month at the Jackson Steakhouse at 7 p.m. in the meeting room. Collectors of all types are welcome in sharing their knowledge and collections. Mobile Renaissance Faire is Nov. 17-18 The Mobile Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds will be the site of the 2-day Renaissance Fair Nov. 17 and 18. The medieval event will feature pirates, jousting knights, medieval fighters, fire breathers, falconry swordfighters, medieval musicians, magical wizards, jugglers, jesters, renaissance dancers and more.
Admission is $10 adults, $5 children ages 5-12 and children 4 and under are free. The fairgrounds are located at 1035 N. Cody Rd. Event hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day.
