Wildcats win thriller over WCHS, 28-26
The win allowed Millry to finish the regular season a perfect 10-0 while Washington County falls to 7-3. Both squads are advancing to the playoffs. Nigel Jones proved to be the Bulldog killer for Millry. The junior recovered a fumble, intercepted a pass, caught a TD pass, ran for a TD and booted a punt that set up a safety. In the fourth quarter, with Washington County leading the contest 25-22, Jones fell on a loose pigskin at the Bulldog 32- yard line, setting up the final possession for the Wildcats. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the 20-yard line and with Millry facing a third down and 8 yards to go, quarterback Dylan Whitsett lofted a pass to Jones who gathered it in and stumbled into the end zone with :30.6 seconds left in the game. A celebration penalty moved the point-after try to the 18-yard line. The kick was blocked by Millry had the 28-26 lead and eventual victory. Washington County started the game with a bang as they drove 59 yards in just three plays with fullback Jarvis Abston powered his way in on a 5-yard run to cap the drive. The added PAT gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 10:59 to go in the first period. The Wildcats answered on the ensuing possession as they drove 68 yards in nine plays to hit pay dirt. Whitsett dialed in wide-out Chris Cherry with a 41-yard TD pass with 6:32 left in the period. The kick was good, knotting the game at 7-7. Millry's defense stepped up their play and forced a punt on the next Bulldog possession. It took just two plays to cover the distance once the Wildcat offense got the ball as Whitsett tossed a 60-yard bomb to Allen Guy for the touchdown. The attempt was no good, Millry took a 13-7 with 4:03 left in the first frame. In the second quarter the Washington County offense played keep-away from the Wildcats as they held the ball for 22 snaps compared to just four for Millry. Early in the period they started at their own 34-yard line and started driving. Staying exclusively on the ground the Bulldogs pushed their way through the Millry defense. Quarterback Drake Warr ended the drive with a 10-yard keeper. The attempt was no good and the game was tied 13-13 with 5:42 left in the half. Washington County attempted another scoring drive but the pass was intercepted at the Millry 5-yard line by Jones, ending the drive, as the half came to an end. In the third frame the Bulldog defense stopped Millry at the WCHS 42-yard line. Jones came on a booted a 41-yard punt, burying the Bulldogs at the 1- yard line. On the first play the Wildcat defense stuffed the Bulldog runner in the end zone for the safety as Millry took a 15-13 lead with 9:34 left in the third. Millry got the ball back following the free kick, but on the fourth down play Lavance Williams picked off a pass and returned it 70 yards for the WCHS touchdown. The try for two came up short but the Bulldogs retook the lead 19-15 with 8:15 left in the period. The Wildcats answered the score on the ensuing possession as Jones sprinted 10 yards for the touchdown. The play capped a 53 yard, seven play drive. The kick was good, giving Millry a 22-19 lead late in the third quarter. Devonte Parker scored from 7 yards out, but the key play in the drive was Warr's 29-yard completion to Donte Turner with the Bulldogs facing fourth and 12 yards to go on the previous play, keeping the drive alive. The Bulldog defense ended a possible scoring drive in the final minutes with an interception by Johntae Parnell at the WCHS 25-yard line.
Two plays later Jones recovered the fumble, setting up the Millry game-winning drive.
