Local gas prices edge higher than in other parts of region

Gas prices are a bit higher than the area's average at this location in Jackson.
Gasoline prices have been, on average, $2.89 for regular in the area for about a week but may have increased by the time this is printed. Oil jumped to a new record above $97 a barrel Tuesday after bombings in Afghanistan and an attack on a Yemeni oil pipeline.

Nationwide, the average price of a gallon of gas jumped 2 cents Tuesday to $3.024 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. The average in the southeastern part of the nation was $2.96 a gallon Tuesday.

Separate surveys found the average for diesel fuel around the country to be $3.303 a gallon, also a new record.

Oil was trading for $97.10 a barrel Tuesday, a new high. The price of crude oil has increased nearly 40 percent since August.

With oil so high, analysts are predicting prices could rise as high as $3.50 to $4 a gallon by next summer.
