Attorney to speak on Medicare D, Medicare Toolkits and LIS reapplication

Kyla Groff Kelim, an attorney with Davis & Neal Attorneys at Law, will be speaking to seniors at the Jackson Nutrition Center Thursday, Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. She will be addressing the important issues of Medicare D open enrollment, Medicare Toolkits and LIS reapplication providing counseling through the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) as well as legal counseling.

Enrollment in the program is as follows:

•There are six weeks total.

•Those six weeks include the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays.

•This gives a total of 24 days for advisors to obtain personal information, perform complex comparisons based on income and prescription drug needs and provide that information so that people can make rational choices before Dec. 31.

•Of the people that Kelim performed comparisons for last year, she believes that more than 60 percent would have saved money by switching to a different card.

•If cards are switched early enough, there should be an easy transition and new cards ready to use on Jan. 1.

•All cards have changed: many premiums have gone up, while some have reduced; the list of drugs covered has changed; many deductibles have increased

•Additional plans have been added.

•Those choosing not to change plans by Dec. 31 will not be able to change until next year.

The issues are complex, but savings are possible in many cases. Those who have Medicare D cards or who have low income subsidies and must reapply by the end of the year should plan on attending this presentation according to Director Sherry Moseley.
