Bob Smith Memorial Auto show names 2007 winners
      Bob Smith Memorial Auto Show announced the winners of this past Saturday's event. Jimmy Neese, of Saraland, won Best of Show Prewar for a 1920 Dodge. Neese was also presented with a special award recognizing him for attending all 25 years of the annual car show.

Coffeeville police chief in the right place at right time
      While traveling to work Friday, Nov. 2, Chief Clint Harrell was driving north on U.S. 43 in Jackson when he received an All Points Bulletin for a black Tahoe with silver rims occupied by three white males. Harrell noticed a vehicle matching the description approximately four cars in front of him.

New Era accused of running 'sweatshop'

      The Teamsters union is alleging that black employees at New Era Cap Co.'s Mobile plant are being discriminated against and also said workers reported "sweatshop"-like conditions at the company's Jackson plant. New Era officials deny the allegations.

Local gas prices edge higher than in other parts of region
      Gasoline prices have been, on average, $2.89 for regular in the area for about a week but may have increased by the time this is printed. Oil jumped to a new record above $97 a barrel Tuesday after bombings in Afghanistan and an attack on a Yemeni oil pipeline.
