Hillcrest-Evergreen ruins Aggies' playoff hopes
Things started off well for Jackson, as they scored on their first offensive possession of the game LaDarius Austin found Will Stevens for an 8- yard touchdown pass. John David Mitchell was perfect on his extra point try to give the Aggies a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. Hillcrest answered the Jackson score with a 43-yard touchdown scamper to pull the Jaguars within one point. The PAT was no good and the Aggies held onto a 7-6 lead halfway through the first stanza. With 1:00 left to go in the first, Aggie running back Damion Bracey scored from 5 yards out to extend the Aggie lead to 14-6 following Mitchell's PAT. Leading 14-12 with 1:30 left in the half, Hillcrest scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass to take a 19-14 lead into intermission. The second half was bad from the start for the home standing Aggies as Hillcrest returned the opening kickoff of the second half 60 yards. It was called back because of a block in the back but the Jaguars scored on their first play from scrimmage in the third quarter on a 68-yard touchdown run to put them up 26-14. Bracy answered the score with his second touchdown of the game a few minutes later from 7 yards out to pull the Aggies to within five points at 26-21 following Mitchell's point after. That was as close as the Aggies would get. Turnovers and bad special teams doomed Jackson the rest of the way. Hillcrest scored two touchdowns with less than five to go in the game to turn the Aggies' homecoming into a disaster. "Our coaching staff and players are extremely disappointed in this loss. We cost ourselves a shot at the playoffs but you have to give credit to Hillcrest. They came up here and played a good football game. We just made too many mistakes to beat a good football team," Aggie Coach John Blackmon said. Jackson (3-6, 3-4, 4A Region 1) will take on Jemison Friday night in the season finale for the Aggies. It is senior recognition night at Legion Field. "This is our seniors' last football game. We are playing for pride and for Jackson High School. We want to send our guys out on a winning note. Jemison is 6-3 and has made the playoffs." " They are a very good football team. They are well balanced offensively and do a good job on defense. They have good skill people and good size up front on both sides of the line of scrimmage. We beat them on the last play of the game last year," Blackmon said.
It has been a tough season for the Aggies with several close heartbreaking losses. Jackson will try to send their seniors out on a winning note and gain some momentum for the next season against Jemison.
