The Marengo High Panthers football team desperately needed a win Oct. 26 for any hope of reaching the state playoffs. Unfortunately, the McIntosh High Demons were making a visit to the Dixons Mills "Swamp."

It was an exciting game with big scoring plays. The third quarter, especially, saw scoring back-and-forth.

Despite a hard fought effort, self-inflicted wounds in the form of turnovers doomed the Panthers, and the Demons escaped with a 20-18 win.

McIntosh got the ball first, but their first drive didn't go very far until it was ended when a pass by quarterback Michael Bolton was intercepted by Marengo's Corey Noid. With 10:51 left in the first quarter, the Panthers had the ball on the McIntosh 20-yard line.

However, Noid gave the ball back through a fumble on the next play. Anthony Barnes recovered the ball for the Demons on their own 15.

McIntosh could only go as far as their 43 and was forced to punt.

Marengo began a long drive at their 30. A pass from James Bennett to Kaylos Pritchett gained 37 yards. Two runs by Ontarrio Woods moved the ball to the Panther 49, and a face mask penalty moved the ball to the Demon 46.

Michael Watkins gained 3 yards, and Kaylos Pritchett reached the 39. A pass to Watkins lost 2 yards, but an offsides penalty on McIntosh brought the ball to the Demon 36.

Kaylos Pritchett gained 3 more yards, but two plays later, Noid was pushed back to the Demon 37. An incomplete pass forced the Panthers to turn the ball over-on-downs giving the Demons good field posistion.

Watkins gained three yards, and a run by Woods reached the 44. On the next play, Watkins would break out of a gang of Demon tacklers and run to the McIntosh 24. A pass to Jeremy Bouler moved the ball to the 14.

As the second quarter began, Watkins broke more tackles to reach the 3-yard line. Two plays later, Kaylos Pritchett punched it in for a touchdown. The point-after kick by Marcus Richardson was no good, and with 10:47 left in the first half, the Panthers led by 7.

The next Panther drive was also ended with a fumble when James Bennett was sacked, and the ball was recovered by Lonnie Weaver. With 1:46 left in the first half, McIntosh had the ball on their own 46.

Penalties on the Demons and a great tackle by Pritchett on a run by Nichols on second down thwarted the McIntosh drive as time ran out in the first half.

The Panthers got the ball first in the third quarter. Despite a great runback by Noid to the Panther 45, Marengo couldn't move any farther than the Demon 46 before they had to punt.

McIntosh next went three downs-and-out. After the punt, Marengo had its next successful drive, beginning on the Panther 45. Pritchett gained 2 yards, and Noid broke it to the Demon 17. Pritchett added two more yards, and hard running by Noid brought the ball to the 9-yard line.

Pritchett scored from there with 5:15 left in the third quarter.

The two-point conversion attempt by Pritchett was no good, and Marengo led 12-8.

However, before the Panther fans knew what hit them, Thomas ran the kickoff back all the way for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt by Jerome Haley was no good, and with 5:41 left in the third, McIntosh led 14-12.
