Fall Festival 2007
Classic cars, entertainment, good food, great shopping and outdoor fun
By Evan Carden SA Editor

This will be the 25th year that what began as the Annual Forestry Festival and eventually became the Jackson Fall Festival, sponsored by the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, will be conducted. The event has grown each year adding more vendors and seeing more people from all over the region attending.

This year's festival is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature plenty of food and craft booths in the downtown area. This will be an opportunity for those wanting to get a jump on holiday shopping.

Featured entertainment will include After 5, from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on stage No. 2; Bro'Ken with special guests on stage No. 1 from 2-3:30 p.m. and Leroy's Ashton Shepherd on stage No. 2 from 3:30-4:15 p.m. Shepherd recently signed a major record deal with Universal Music Group under the MCA label, Nashville, Tenn.

New features of the event will include the first annual Chili Cook-Off and a Market in the Street area for business owners.

Many items such as jewelry, Christmas items, children's toys, purses, cookware, children's and women's clothing and much more will be available.

Always a crowd pleaser, the Bob Smith Memorial Antique Auto Show will display more than 100 automobiles from various eras. (See related story on page 3-A.)

More than 20 food vendors will offer various treats including fried candy bars, funnel cakes, hotdogs, hamburgers and seafood just to name a few.

The Fall Festival is a family event offering entertainment for every age. Local school and church choirs, dance groups and bands will be performing. The children may enjoy unlimited use of various games with the purchase of an armband for $7.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be entertained by the annual Lumberjack and Saw Competition, which will be conducted behind city hall. This year's competition will feature participants from as far away as California.

According to Wayne Slayton of Slayton Brothers Inc., a longtime sponsor of the event, working on behalf of the chamber, former Jackson resident Bob Lowe is one of the people credited with being instrumental in starting the Lumberjack Competition as part of the Fall Festival.

There will be plenty of merchandise for shoppers to choose from.
"We were going to Montgomery to the Homelight Tournament of Kings, an annual competition that was really big at that time," said Slayton. "Bob was there and was interested in doing something similar in Jackson."

The event features chainsaw and manual competitions, including four stock saw competitions and a modified pipe saw event.

The manual competition includes cross cutting, single backing, underhand chop and axe throwing.

The top winners in each category each receive a new Stihl chainsaw provided by Slayton Brothers.
The wood chips will fly during the annual Lumberjack Competition.
As always, the Southern Cruisers will show off their iron horses.
