Fulmer better listen to his own words
SPORTS REPORT
BY CHRIS SHERMAN SA Sports Writer

Oh, the irony. It wasn't but just a few years ago that Phillip Fulmer made the comment that "Alabama football would be out of business" before too long because of NCAA troubles.

While he may have been right about the NCAA troubles with the whole Albert Means fiasco in Memphis, he underestimated how strong and stable the Crimson Tide football program is.

Ever heard the saying "You can't keep a good dog down"?

Well in this case it is true. Bama and new Head Coach Nick Saban emphasized that with a 41-17 drubbing of the helpless Vols Saturday morning at Bryant Denny Stadium.

Fulmer is the one that looks as if he will be "out of business" very soon. The silly cliches keep piling in too.

Current Foley star and Alabama verbal commitment Robert Lester told a recruiting network that the Tennessee coaches called and told him they were hoping he made it to Tuscaloosa Saturday because he would see who the big dog really is. Is that right? You think they may be rethinking that statement now?

Tennessee dropped to 4-3 overall and to 2-2 in the conference with a date with the Ole Ball Coach coming up Saturday in Knoxville. It looks like Fulmer and the mighty Vols will be without a championship of any kind, including in the SEC, for the ninth straight year, dating back to the 1998 national championship.

That does not bode well for the future of the great pumpkin. The one thing he has been able to boast about the last few years is the fact that he has dominated Alabama. He can't even do that anymore as the Tide has now won three out of the last four games on the "Third Saturday in October".

So what is next for the man that once stabbed one of the greatest coaches in college football, Johnny Majors, in the back? Will he fire his staff and be granted another year to keep the sinking ship above water?

My guess is he will be given another year to try and right the ship, but you will not see him cleaning out any of his assistants' offices. He has seemed, on the surface, to be a very loyal coach to the men who work under him.

I am just beginning to have my suspicions he is afraid of bringing in some new hot shot coach because he doesn't want to get "Fulmered".
