The Leroy Bears won a second straight region championship Friday night at Palmer Stadium with a 47-20 romp over Bayside Academy.

Leroy (7-1, 6-0) out gained Bayside 331-33 in the first half as the Bears built a 28-0 lead after only one quarter of play.

The Bears got on the board first with 11:02 in the opening stanza when Clint Moseley hit Patrick Rivers for a 58-yard touchdown pass. Paul Gartman was perfect on the PAT to give the Bears a 7-0 lead .58 seconds into the contest.

Rivers struck again on Bayside's first series when the Leroy playmaker intercepted an Admiral pass and returned it to the Bayside 38-yard line. Moseley then found running back Michael Bracey for a 32- yard touchdown pass with 6:49 left in the first quarter as the Bear route was officially on. Gartman's PAT was successful to put the Bears on top 14-0.

The Leroy defense forced another three-and-out and Bayside had to punt the ball back to the dangerous Bear offense. It didn't take long for the Bears to score again as Moseley broke free on a scramble and took the ball 49 yards for his third touchdown of the quarter.

He was 6-7 for 132 yards passing and had three carries for 59 yards with three touchdowns in less than two quarters of action. Gartman hit the point after to give Leroy a 21-0 lead.

After another three-and-out by the overmatched Bayside offense, Stephen Scoggins blocked the Admiral punt and returned it 12 yards for another Leroy touchdown. Just like that it was 28-0 Leroy after only one quarter as Gartman's PAT was again right down the middle.

"We got off to a good start. Moseley only had to play three series in the game and everyone was able to play. Everyone works hard all week so it was nice to be able to get some of our younger guys some playing time.

"Winning the championship (region) is big. It is our second straight region championship," Leroy Coach Danny Powell said.

Leroy emptied the bench with less than five minutes to go in the half or the score would have been much worse. Aerick Davis scored on a 68-yard quarterback keeper on his only series at quarterback in the second quarter to put Leroy up 35-0.

In the second half, Phillip Ervin scored on an 81-yard touchdown run and Jarrod Davis ran in from 7 yards out to cap the Leroy scoring. Bayside (4-4, 3- 3) put up 20 points in the second half against the Leroy second stringers with Brandon Pilot and Dave McKeithen scoring on 2- yard touchdown runs and Daniel Kalametti returning a punt for a touchdown.

Leroy travels to Red Level Friday night to take on the Red Level Tigers.

The two teams met up last year in Palmer Stadium to determine the winner of 2A Region 1. This time, things are a little different. It is still the same ole Bears but the Tigers have gone from first to worst as they will be looking for their first win of the season at 0-7.

"They are struggling. They have had some key injuries and some people quit. It is unusual to see a team drop that far in one year," Powell said.

Game time is 7 p.m.
