Jackson Police arrest several on drug-related charges The Jackson Police Department reported the arrests of several individuals over the weekend on drug related charges. Two juveniles and one adult were arrested at the Grove Apartments Friday, Oct. 19, after Officer Jonathan Downey, who was patrolling in the area, noticed one of them attempting to hide something in his lap as he passed by. According to Jackson Police reports, Downey confronted the two juveniles, ages 15 and 17, who were sitting in front of one of the apartments. The officer found a brown bag in the 15 year old's possession, which contained a green leafy substance that he believed to be marijuana. The other juvenile was found to be sitting on what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette. A third subject, Dennis Jenkins, 50, of Jackson was questioned at the scene by Downey and reportedly gave a fictitious name to the officer. He was placed under arrest and charged with giving false information to a police officer. Downey made a second drug related arrest around midnight, Saturday, Oct. 20, after he observed the driver of a green Chevrolet Tahoe acting suspiciously by turning the vehicle's lights off and on in the area of Broad Street and Davis Avenue. Officer Downey pulled the vehicle over and asked the driver, LaShawn Pernell, 39, of Jackson, to exit. According to his report, when Downey attempted to pat down Pernell, he put his hands inside his pockets and refused to remove them. The officer attempted to pull Pernell's hands from his pockets and the subject resisted, attempting to flee.
Downey utilized his Tazer to subdue Pernell. During a search of the suspect, he found what appeared to be a pipe used for smoking crack cocaine. Pernell was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
