First Presbyterian Church welcomes interim minister

Dr. and Mrs. Sidney Leak III
The Rev. Dr. Sidney L. Leak III of Orange Beach has accepted a call as an interim pastor for the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson.

A native of Mobile, he graduated from the University Military School (UMS) and was a Distinguished Military Graduate of Spring Hill College.

Commissioned through the ROTC program, he served on active duty in the Army at Ft. Lee, Va., Ft. Benning, Ga. and Ft. McClellan, Ala., 1975-79. He received a master of divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1983 and was ordained by the Presbytery of South Mississippi to serve as pastor of the Sandersville Presbyterian Church.

From 1987-91, he pastured the Ensley Highland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham and received a doctor of ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1989. From February - May, 1991, he served with the 20th Special Forces in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Serving the First Presbyterian Church, Manchester, Tenn. from 1991 until retirement in 2007, he also served the 142d Signal Brigade and the Joint Force Headquarters, Alabama, as chaplain. He graduated from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa. in 2003.

He is an honorably retired minister member of the Presbytery of South Alabama, Presbyterian Church USA, having retired from the Army in 2005 with the rank of colonel.

Dr. Leak will preach in Jackson Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and 18. Beginning Dec. 9, he will be in Jackson each Sunday.

He and his wife Becky, while not residing in Jackson, will be available for special needs and will spend two days a month providing pastoral care.

Dr. Leak's military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Service Medal of Alabama and the Senior Parachutist Badge. His interests include learning, analyzing and uncovering new insights with regard to the Bible and Christian faith, military history, Alabama history and SEC football.

Sunday services include Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 11. Everyone is invited to attend services in the sanctuary, located at 302 E. Church St. in Jackson.
