Region rundown for area teams
SPORTS REPORT
BY CHRIS SHERMAN SA Sports Writer

Where has the season gone? It is hard to imagine that we are now heading down the homestretch with only three games remaining for our AHSAA schools and two remaining for the AISA.

This seems like as good a spot as ever to break down the region standings to see where our local teams sit as most are getting ready for the playoffs.

Let's start with the Jackson Aggies who sit at 2-5 overall with a 2-3 mark in region play. Jackson has games remaining at W.S. Neal on Friday, home against Hillcrest-Evergreen next week and then home against Jemison to close out the season.

Although the Aggies no longer control their own destiny, winning out would give Jackson a strong shot at taking the last playoff spot in 4A Region 1. A loss in either the W.S. Neal or Hillcrest- Evergreen game would eliminate the Aggies from post-season play.

So if you are an Aggie fan and are wondering which teams you need to pull for these last three weeks then your answer lies soley with the T.R. Miller Tigers. Jackson needs to beat W.S. Neal and Hillcrest- Evergreen and have Miller knock off Neal in the Battle of Murder Creek, which will in return eliminate Neal and shore up the fourth spot for the Aggies.

A Neal win over Miller will put the teams in a three-way tie with 4-3 region records and that does not bode well for the Aggies due to their overall record.

Across the river at Leroy, things are a lot easier to figure out and probably a lot less stressful for the home folks. The Bears are 6-1 overall and 5-0 in 2A Region 1. Leroy can pick up the region championship with a homecoming win this Friday at Palmer Stadium against the Bayside Academy Admirals (3-3, 2-1).

If the Admirals can somehow pull the upset, the Bears would then only need a win over winless Red Level (0-6) the following week. It seems like it is great to be a Leroy Bear this time of the year.

In 1A Region 1, there is a five-way race right now for the top four spots. The Millry Wildcats are leading the pack at 7-0 overall record with a 5-0 mark in the region. McIntosh and J.U. Blacksher follow with both teams 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the region with both teams losing to Millry. Barring a breakdown on Wildcat hill, the Wildcats have the region title well in hand only needing a win against Marengo (4-2; 3-2) on Friday or winless Coffeeville the following week to take the championship.

McIntosh can take the second spot with wins over Blacksher (Friday) and Marengo the following week. They are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs regardless.

The biggest surprise so far has been the play of the Fruitdale Pirates who are led by a new coach in Scotty Mason. Fruitdale is 3-4 overall with a 2- 3 mark in region play including a stunning 7-0 win over Marengo last Friday. If the Pirates win out over 1-5 J.F. Shields and 0-6 Coffeeville, coupled with either a Marengo loss to Millry or McIntosh then they will take the fourth spot in the region and head to the playoffs.

In 3A Region 1, there isn't much drama as the Clarke County Bulldogs (7-0; 5-0) need only a win over either 1-5 Francis Marion or 1-5 Central- Hayneville to wrap up the region title. The next two spots are pretty much guaranteed as Sumter County looks to finish second with Washington County claiming the third spot. Mobile Christian has their hands on the fourth spot in the region with a 2-4 overall record.

That pretty much breaks down the playoff picture for our teams that still have hopes of making it to Birmingham. If you are confused after reading this just imagine how I felt trying to compute these standings.
