The Washington County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments (WCAVFD) participated in and conducted several events during Fire Prevention Week, which was observed Oct. 7-13.

Fire departments from the county traveled to Jackson Wednesday, Oct. 10, to participate in that city's annual Fire Prevention Parade.

The WCAVFD conducted its own parade Saturday, Oct. 13 in Chatom, with departments from other areas participating.

That night, the WCAVFD met for its Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony at the Chatom Community Center. Darol Singleton of the Yarbo Fire Department is the president of the association and served as master of ceremonies. Ed Paulk, State Fire Marshall, was guest speaker and he asked for the public's assistance to make structures safer in Alabama. His group is beginning with schools and they will visit any school about which they receive a complaint or question of safety.

The annual awards went to:

Officer of the Year - Robbie Davidson, McIntosh

Fire Department of the Year - Epworth

Firefighter of the Year - Chief Eddie Coaker, Epworth

Probate Judge Charles Singleton, the immediate past president of the Washington County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments, spoke briefly at the end of the program. The judge, who has been very active in the creation of the Washington County Association and has been an active volunteer fireman for many years, told of his pride as he looked down the line of fire trucks and equipment in today's Fire Parade in Chatom. "There are some people in this room who can remember when there was one fire truck in Washington County. It was in Chatom and it carried about 250 gallons of water. They would come if you called," he said, "but they would have to stand and watch your property burn."

Getting a bit emotional, Singleton added, "It was a beautiful sight looking down that line (of fire trucks). He expressed appreciation to the people of Washington County for voting themselves a tax to create the 19 volunteer fire departments.
