Grant will aid assault victims

Sexual assault victims in three southwest Alabama counties will have access to professional assistance thanks in part to a $62,410 grant awarded through the office of Gov. Bob Riley.

The funds will help the Family Counseling Center of Mobile continue offering services 24 hours a day for victims in Clarke, Mobile and Washington counties through its Rape Crisis Center.

The center operates a 24-hour crisis line, accompanies victims to hospitals and medical exams and provides counselors and social workers to help victims heal from the trauma of the assault.

It also provides training to emergency and medical personnel, crisis counselors and law enforcement officers to ensure victims are treated with sensitivity throughout examinations, investigations and court proceedings.
