Local 15 year old attending Baylor
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Kelly Neugent
At age 15, Kelly Neugent, of Jackson, is getting the experience of a lifetime by getting a taste of what college life might be like.

Neugent began attending Baylor University's prep school when she was still 14 and said she is loving the experience. She was offered a scholarship to attend the school after scoring well on the ACT.

Living away from home at age 15 has been a little strange but rewarding experience, according to Neugent. "I miss my family and friends, but I stay pretty busy there," she added.

The school she attends has about 4,000 students. After school she spends time doing community service, tutoring mostly younger students at other schools. She has also worked in a soup kitchen in Chattanooga, Tenn. where the school is located.

Neugent lives on campus in the Hunter Dorm, which is the smallest of three dormitories. "There are only 25 people living there," she said. "I'm happy that's the one I was assigned to."

On the weekends Neugent said she takes advantage of school-sponsored trips and activities. She recently went to see "Disney Princesses On Ice" at Six Flags, goes to the movies and has been white water rafting.

Neugent's mother, Susie, said her house is quiet with her daughter gone. "It's taken some getting used to," she said, "but I know this is a good experience for her. Baylor is a wonderful school and the faculty there is great." Neugent said she has aspirations of one day pursuing a career as a pediatrician. "I love kids and I am very interested in medicine, so it seems only natural that I would combine the two," she said.

She will be following a family tradition by entering the world of medicine. Her mother works fulltime as a nurse for Infirmary Hospice and is employed part-time at Jackson Health Care nursing facility. Her grandmother, Joan James is a retired nurse.

While she said she misses her friends in Jackson, she is making some new, good friends at Baylor. "There's a lot to keep me busy there, so I don't get much time to think about not being at home," she said. "I am so thankful for this opportunity."
