Several local police officers received honors during the Alabama Attorney General Office's Law Enforcement Summit in Montgomery, Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Representing the Southern District, Officers Barry Fowler and Carey Slayton of the Jackson Police Department and Trooper Darrell Linder of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, all in Clarke County, were jointly awarded:

On March 8, an emergency call came from Nancy's Daycare in Jackson. Officers Barry Fowler, Carey Slayton, and Trooper Darrell Linder who were in the vicinity and heard the emergency dispatch, responded to the call regarding a child found unconscious and floating in a swimming pool.

Trooper Linder was the first officer on the scene. He found a one-and-a-half year old child unconscious and without a pulse. Linder performed CPR until a slight pulse was obtained.

Officera Fowler and Slayton arrived and noticed that a second child was in the swimming pool, face-down and unconscious. This child was also removed from the pool with no pulse.

Fowler and Slayton initiated and continued CPR until they were relieved by Jackson Emergency Transport Service (JETS) personnel and members of the Jackson Fire Department.

"In responding to this call, in taking charge of the situation, and in tirelessly performing lifesaving services on two small children, Officers Fowler and Slayton and Trooper Linder saved these children's lives," said Attorney General Troy King. "This is a tremendous personal and professional accomplishment deserving the highest commendation of the Office of the Attorney General.

"Officer Barry Fowler, Officer Carey Slayton, and Trooper Darrell Linder's sustained, superior performance, coupled with their devotion to duty, is in keeping with the highest traditions of public service and reflects great credit upon these law enforcement officers, their families, respective agencies and the State of Alabama," King concluded.
