Leroy Girl Scouts take part in National Public Lands Day

Leroy Girl Scouts (L-R) Jr. Troop 8473 and Brownie Troop 8476 at the St. Stephens Courthouse just before they begin their day of work.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, Leroy's Girl Scout Troops 8473 and 8476 celebrated National Public Lands Day, the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy.

On this day the troops decided to volunteer at Historic St. Stephens Park. Wanda Braun and Jim Long treated the troops to a tour of the St. Stephens courthouse. Afterwards, the troops set off to their projects.

Over the past month the Junior troop had to learn how to identify trees. They made laminated signs that identified the trees and placed them on the walking/horse trail in the park.

The Brownie troop project was to plant 12 trees, which included six crepe myrtles, three magnolias and three cypresses.

They also hung five birdhouses and donated a concrete bench for people to sit on as they take in the view. After their projects were finished, the troops had lunch under the pavilion and a walk through Old Town St. Stephens.

The troops expressed thanks to Quincy Baros of Southern Lawn & Garden, Boise, Bill Dortch, Wade McLain and Home Depot for their contributions to the community service project.
