Jackson Academy fell to 0-5 on the season with a 48-6 loss on the road to Sparta. The Eagles played lights out in the first half as JA held Sparta to 7 yards rushing and only trailed 14-6 at intermission.

David Hughston put the Eagles on the board late in the second quarter with a 20-yard touchdown scamper to tie the game at 6-6 with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

After the Eagle defense stood tall and got the ball back for quarterback Logan Barnes and the JA offense, disaster struck.

Sparta picked off a pass and took it the distance for a gamechanging play right before the half ended. The pick-six put the Eagles in the 14-6 halftime hole.

"We played a real good first half. We got off to a good start. We just kind of fell apart in the second half," Coach Mike Garrett said.

The Eagles gave up a big punt return and a big pass for a touchdown in the second half as Sparta never looked back in the lopsided win.

This week, the Eagles will welcome in the fifth ranked team in AISA in the South Choctaw Rebels. The two teams met up in the preseason in a jamboree with the Rebels prevailing 28-0.

"We have a chance to win a big game and we have them at home. We played them in a scrimmage earlier in the year and felt like we held our own. It is a big opportunity," Garrett said.
