Big games on tap for Friday night
SPORTS REPORT
BY CHRIS SHERMAN SA Sports Writer

Friday night will rival with week one that featured Jackson vs Leroy and Thomasville vs Sweet Water.

This week just might be better!

The top ranked team in 2A, the Leroy Bears, head north to face-off with the top ranked team in 1A, the Sweet Water Bulldogs, in a made for television game.

The game will actually not be on the tube, despite rumors that ESPN Gameday was on the way.

But while there may not be camera action on the field Friday night at Noah Atkins Stadium, there should be plenty of other action.

The Bears are looking for revenge after Sweet Water came into Palmer Stadium last year and whipped the Bears 35- 6. Leroy did recover and go on to win the 2A state championship.

Leroy Coach Danny Powell said earlier this year that if he knew the Bears would lose to Sweet Water and go on to win the state championship again this season he would gladly take the loss.

While that may be true, I am not sure how happy Coach Powell would be with another loss. As you know as well as I do, the Bears do not like to lose.

So while this game doesn't have any playoff implications or any other impact other than bragging rights and maybe a sky-high confidence level, this game matters.

Both teams believe that they are the premier program in Southwest Alabama. A loss will do little to change that but a win would do a lot to prove it true.

Now while eveyone is getting carried away with the game over in Marengo County, the Jackson Aggies will be heading to Grove Hill to battle with their Clarke County rivals, CCHS.

This game is equally important for both teams. The Aggies are struggling at 2-2 with losses to both Leroy and Thomasville.

Another loss to a rival school may be too much for the Aggies to overcome.

Clarke County on the other hand struts into the game with an undefeated record and ranked second in 3A. But the Aggies have been a thorn in the Bulldogs' rear end with twostraight wins in the long standing series.

It will be the 91st meeting between the two schools that are separated by about 15 miles. Jackson leads the alltime series 54-29-7. Since 1997 the series is tied up at 5-5.

The Aggies dominated the series from 1979-1992 outscoring the Bulldogs by a whopping 405-71 margin.

It is safe to say that both of these games should be great. Good luck choosing one!
