New byword being used at THS "Gotcha!" has become the byword at Thomasville High School and Thomasville Middle School. "When you catch a kid engaging in a random act of kindness or going the extra mile or picking up paper off the floor," they receive a Gotcha award, THS Principal Kyle Ferguson told the city Board of Education Sept. 20. "We really stress school pride….They really help keep the school clean." A Gotcha award at THS will get a student to break five minutes early. "That's a big deal for them," he said. "You don't have to stand in line for a drink machine or a snack machine. It's a privilege." At THS, "we've got three beliefs: be responsible, be respectful, be resourceful. We try to state things in positive terms and not say 'no' this (or) 'no' that. Instead of rules, we have expectations." Terry Norton, principal of Thomasville Middle School, gave credit for the Gotcha program to his assistant principal William Combs. "All I did was nod my head yes and he's done everything else," Norton said. "It's going to be a fantastic tool….That positive reinforcement has been something we've been missing for several years." TMS is hopeful that soon IPods will be available as prizes in their Gotcha program. Combs will open a Gotcha store, Norton said. "Any student that has received five Gotchas this year, during our elective class the last 15 minutes - they may be able to go in there and it may get them a hat. You're going to have to be a pretty good student to (eventually buy an I-Pod)….They're already thinking about it."
The Gotcha program makes a difference, Norton said. "It might be silly, but we (adults) like to be rewarded for what we do - kids even more so."
