Region gets grant to fight crime A $150,000 grant was recently awarded through the governor's office to the Mobile County Commission to support a project to collect, analyze and map crime data to help law enforcement agencies across southwest Alabama reduce crime. The grant will enable the continued operation of the South Alabama Crime Analysis and Mapping Project. Information is shared with law enforcement agencies in Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Dallas, Escambia, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe, Perry, Washington and Wilcox counties.
The project collects data for property crimes, drug trafficking and domestic violence in the 12-county area to help police officers and sheriff's deputies fight crime. Officers with access to crime-mapping software will be able to access crime data and maps from their patrol car computers. The project also creates and distributes crime-trend reports and bulletins.
