What was a close game changed in the course of 30 seconds as the Thomasville Tigers exploded in the first quarter and then ran away with a 31-14 region win over their county rival Jackson last Friday at Simpkins Stadium- Legion Field.

The Aggie defense had just stopped a Tiger drive at the 9- yard line when Corey Besteda recovered a backward pass.

Unable to do anything with the pigskin, Jackson was forced to punt. The snap sailed over punter Anfernee Crayton's and he scooped the ball up and ran out of the back of the end zone for the safety, making it 2-0 in favor of Thomasville with 4:56 to go in the period.

That started an onslaught from Thomasville which would lead to 17 points in the course of 30 seconds.

On the free kick from the Aggies, THS' Alex Buford gathered in the ball at the 35- yard line and returned it 65 yards for the touchdown. Harrison Lewis made the point-after touchdown kick and Thomasville had a 9-0 lead.

On the first play of the ensuing Jackson drive, a loose ball was recovered by the Tigers' Jarrell Watters at the 40-yard line.

Buford broke free on the first play, covering the 40 yards for the touchdown. Roya Campbell ran in the two-point conversion and Thomasville had a 17-0 lead with 4:26 to go in the period, just 30 seconds after the safety was recorded.

Another miscue on Jackson's special teams saw the punt snap sail over the kicker's head and Thomasville took over at the JHS 14-yard line.

Two plays later quarterback Daniel Rodgers tossed an 8- yard scoring pass to Shed Simmons. Lewis' kick increased the lead to 24-0 with :36 seconds left in the opening stanza.

Jackson was undaunted and took the ensuing possession downfield. Staring at their own 35-yard line, they marched to paydirt in eight plays with Andrew Ezell scoring on a 36- yard sprint. The run came with the Aggies facing a fourth-andone.

John David Mitchell converted the PAT, cutting the lead to 24-7 with 8:58 left in the first half.

The Jackson defense stopped two potential Tiger scoring drives just before the half with Roderick Washington intercepting two passes, one in the end zone, leaving the score at 24-7 in favor of Thomasville at the break.

In the third quarter the two teams traded possessions before the Aggies got the ball on a very short field.

With Thomasville on a short march, a coughed up ball was scooped up by JHS' Richard Howard and returned down to the Tiger 6-yard line.

It only took three plays before Tony Ivory scored on a 2-yard plunge. Mitchell's kick was true and Jackson cut into the lead 24-14 with 1:26 left in the period.

After that it was a series of trading turnovers as Jackson's Besteda intercepted a pass at the Aggie 31-yard line.

A few plays later Tysean Thompson got the ball back for Thomasville with an interception near midfield.

Thomasville gave the ball right back six plays later with a fumble recovered by Damien Bracy at the Jackson 11-yard line, halting a possible scoring drive.

Midway through the fourth Thomasville had possession following a punt and moved downfield.

Campbell capped a 43-yard drive with a 6-yard dive. Lewis made the kick and Thomasville had a 31-14 lead with 4:54 left in the game.

On the second Jackson play Katrell Watters intercepted the pass, giving the ball back to the offense.

Thomasville drove down to the 5-yard line and knelt on the ball to run out the clock, preserving the 31-14 region win.

Alex Buford led all rushers with 103 yards on eight carries and a score. He also had a kickoff return for a score and had an interception on defense.

Campbell added 59 yards on 13 carries and score.

Rodgers was 8-of-20 passing for 109 yards and a score. Thompson caught two passes for 53 yards. Simmons had three catches for 30 yards and a score.

Ezell paced Jackson with 52 yards on 12 carries.

The Thomasville defense held Jackson to just 78 yards of total offense and just six first downs.

Both teams remain in region play this week as Thomasville (2-1, 2-0) host W.S. Neal while Jackson (1-2, 1-1) travels to play Southside-Selma.

Both games start at 7 p.m.
