The Leroy Bears found a way to get past a slow start to throttle their way past the Excel Panthers for a key 28-7 win last Friday night at Palmer Stadium in Leroy.

Early in the second quarter the Leroy offense and defense both provided points to break open a scoreless game.

On the first play of the second frame quarterback Clint Moseley tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to Aerick Davis.

Paul Gartman kicked the PAT to make the score 7-0.

On the ensuing Excel possession, the Bears defensive back Chris Weaver stepped in front of a Panther pass and returned it the other way 35 yards for the touchdown.

Gartman again converted the kick and Leroy had a 14-0 lead with 10:15 left to play before halftime.

Moseley called his own number for the next Leroy touchdown on a 4-yard bootleg. Again Gartman was true with his kick and Leroy had a 21-0 lead with 4:20 left before halftime.

Excel responded when Nathan Hood connected with Greg Hollinger on a 65-yard touchdown pitch and catch. Paul Bowlanger kicked the PAT, making it 21-7 at halftime.

The game's final score came late in the fourth quarter when tailback Michael Bracy scored on a 5-yard sprint. Gartman made it 4-for-4 on kicks and the Bears won the region contest 28-7.

The Leroy defense overshadowed the Bear offense in the contest as they held the Panthers to just 112 yards in total offense with more than half of that coming on one scoring play. In the second half they limited Excel to just 3 yards of total offense and one first down.

Weaver had two interceptions and Josh Trotter had a fumble recovery.

Moseley was 17-of-25 passing for 230 yards and a score. He was also the leading rusher with 55 yards on nine carries and a TD.

Patrick Rivers caught five passes for 81 yards. Davis hauled in four passes for 56 yards. Steven Scoggin had four catches for 42 yards.

Leroy (3-0, 2-0) takes to the road this week to play a much improved Georgiana (2-1, 2-0) squad who beat Southern Choctaw last week.

Game time is 7 p.m.
