Eagles retire jersey in memory of Carpenter
By Barry H. Hendrix
A ceremony was held Sept. at halftime of the Jackson Academy-Patrician Academy game to retire the jersey of a late student, Stephen Ray Carpenter who played for the Eagles' football team, most notably the 1979 team.

School administrators, family, classmates and friends gathered for the ceremony on the field. Chairman of the board at JA, Stanley Beard, called Carpenter "one of the greatest Eagles of all time."

"He was an active influence," said former Coach Sam Miller. "He didn't just talk the game, he played it…. He set an excellent example on the practice field. Stephen Ray was consistent. He was intent. He was dedicated. He was hardnosed, and he was respectful.

"…Number 39 will forever be remembered with respect, dignity and honor.

"He did not say much," coach Wayne Blackwell said in a message read at the ceremony. "He led by example. Stephen's work and leadership was one of the reason his class went from 3-7-1 as sophomores to playing in the state championship his senior year." (The Eagles were defeated by Monroe Academy in the title game.)

"…The memory of Stephen Carpenter is one of the highlights of my career in education," Blackwell wrote.

"He certainly was the hardest hitting person I had to go against," said former classmate Leland McCully. "…Some of the best memories Stephen Ray had, and certainly this group here tonight, happened right here under these lights…. There was something special about that group (the 1979 team)."
