Marengo wears down Coffeeville
The Panthers hosted the Marengo High School Panthers, and the resulting cat fight was a defensive struggle throughout the first 3-quarters. The Marengo ground attack was finally able to wear down Coffeeville in the fourth quarter for an 18-0 victory. Despite not getting in the end zone, Coffeeville didn't give away the ball as much through turnovers as they did in the first game, but they were hit with costly penalties along the way. Marengo, in fact, was the team making mistakes in the first half. A shanked punt on their first drive gave Coffeeville the ball on the Marengo 20. However, Coffeeville couldn't move the ball. Marengo was threatening in the second quarter, but they fumbled, and Coffeeville recovered on their own three-yard line. A miss communication from coaches to players had Coffeeville go-for-it on fourth down. The pass was incomplete, and with 2:36 left in the first half, Marengo went to work. In two plays from the Coffeeville 3-yard line, Donte Packer scored. The point-after kick was blocked, and Marengo led by 6. Coffeeville began the second half with a long drive thanks to the hard running of Trenton Cade, Tamarcus Gortman and quarterback Kristian Watkins. However, they turned the ball over-on-downs at the Marengo 4. Despite a 60-yard run by Marengo's Micheal Watkins, the next drive was stopped by a fumble with 8:01 left in the third quarter. Coffeeville began their next long drive on their 31-yard line, and they were able to go as far as the Marengo 17 before penalties foiled their plans. The two teams would punt back and forth into the fourth quarter. Marengo would score again with a drive that began in midfield. Running back Micheal Watkins pounded the Coffeeville defense, and he scored with an 8-yard TD run with 8:23 left in the game. The two-point conversion was no good. Marengo would put the icing on the cake with a drive, which began after Marengo's Corey Noid intercepted Trenton Cade's pass. From the Marengo 32-yard line, Watkins was hard to stop. In five consecutive plays, he had reached the Coffeeville 9. Throw in a breather from quarterback James Dumas with a 4-yard run, and then Watkins scored from the Coffeeville 5 for another TD with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter.
The two-point conversion was no good, and the final score was Marengo 18-Coffeeville 0.
