Sunflower men charged with felony marijuana possession
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Two Sunflower men face felony marijuana possession charges following a traffic stop, Sept. 9, by McIntosh Police.

Michael Tyrone Dixon Jr., 22, and Shamar LaQuan Reed, 26, were arrested and charged with first degree possession of marijuana around 2 p.m., Sunday.

According to McIntosh Police Officer Brad Singleton, he observed the vehicle the two were occupying traveling north on U.S. Highway 43 in the area of Topton Road and believed the window tint to be darker than is allowed by state law. He attempted to pull the automobile over, following it to the north part of the jurisdiction.

"They maintained their speed, failing to stop until I turned the blue lights on," said Singleton.

Once he had the vehicle stopped, Singleton checked the window tint and found it was in violation of the law. He asked Reed, who was the driver, for his driver's license and discovered he had none.

Officer Singleton then asked Reed to step out of the vehicle in order to obtain information for the ticket he was preparing to write. "I patted him down and felt a bag of something in one of his pockets," said the officer. "I removed it and discovered it was what appeared to be approximately 1 ounce of marijuana."

Singleton said he then asked Dixon if he had any illegal drugs in his possession and was informed that he had approximately the same amount on his person.

The officer notified the Washington County Sheriff's Department and Deputy L.C. Howell responded to the scene.

A pistol was also found in Dixon's possession and confiscated by the officers along with approximately 2 ounces of the illegal drug.

Both men were booked into the Washington County Jail on the possession charges. According to Singleton, Dixon may face additional charges for possession of the handgun.
