A crash on Highway 56 just west of Wagarville, involving a pickup and a tractor-trailer rig, Thursday, Sept. 6, claimed the life of a Millry man.

According to Alabama State Troopers, the wreck occurred around 2:15 p.m. when a 2000 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Barry Keith McIlwain, 39, Millry, collided with a 2004 International driven by John Thomas Marshall, Jr. McIlwain was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County Coroner Shane Thornton.

The semi, which was owned by Southfresh Feeds of Demopolis, was pulling an empty tanker when the two collided and left the roadway upon impact. Although the troopers' spokesperson could not give the direction of travel of either vehicle, appeared that the tractor-trailer was headed east and the pickup was going west.

Emergency personnel responding to the scene included the Chatom Fire Department, McIntosh Rescue Squad, Alabama State Troopers, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Clarke County Sheriff's Department, Clarke County Emergency Management Agency and Task Force One.

Traffic came to a standstill from both directions for several hours while the crash scene was investigated and cleared. The incident remains under investigation by Trooper Strickland.

According to state troopers, the wreck occurred on a bridge on Highway 56, 2.7 miles from the Mississippi state line. Parker was traveling east and Deese was traveling west when they collided. Deese was injured in the crash.
