Clarke Prep rolls up 524 yards in win over PA
To the surprise of the crowd and opposing team, the Gators came out flinging the ball on the first play of the game. Quarterback J.D. Powell hit split-end Chad Dickinson with a 40-yard completion to move CPS into Saints territory. Seven plays later Bret Bradford scored the team's first points of the season on a 4-yard plunge. Hunter Mayton tacked on the point-after touchdown and the Gators led 7-0 with 6:41 left in the first quarter. The Gator defense forced a punt on the ensuing Patrician possession, but a fumble on the third play gave the Saints the ball back at the CPS 35-yard line. Playing on a short field it only took one play for Barry Meeks to cover the distance for the touchdown.
Clarke Prep needed four snaps to increase their lead on the following possession. Bradford had an 11-yard run. Becton then had a 24-yard blast followed by a 30-yard scoring jaunt. Mayton's kick was no good but the Gators had a 13-6 lead with 1:15 to go in the period. The defense again turned back Patrician and the Gator offense took over at their own 24-yard line. Three running plays netted a first down when Powell found a streaking Dickinson behind the Saints' defense for a 63-yard scoring bomb. Bradford ran in the 2-point conversion to increase the lead to 21-6 with 9:42 to go before halftime. Patrician seemed unfazed by the score. They got a 26-yard kick-off return to put the ball in Gator territory. Seven plays later Meeks raced in from 9-yards out for the score. The try for the two-point pass came up short as the Gators held onto a 21-12 lead with 6:12 to go before the break. Clarke Prep threatened once more but turned the ball over on downs at the Saints' 12-yard line. In the third period the Gator defense, forced another PA punt. After a good kick CPS set up shop at their own 9-yard line. An illegal-shift penalty backed the ball up to the 4-yard line before the offense got on-track. Becton broke off 9 and 69-yard runs to move the ball deep into the Saints side of the field. Bret Bradford capped the long drive as he darted through the Patrician defense for a 17-yard scoring jaunt. Hunter Mayton converted the PAT as CPS increased their lead to 28-12 with 6:00 left in the period. The Saints showed their quickstrike ability on the next possession as Meeks broke free of the Gator defense and raced 60-yards for the touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, but Patrician cut into the lead 28-18 with 5:35 left in the third. Clarke Prep hit pay-dirt on the ensuing possession as they went to the air with J.D. Powell hitting Chad Dickinson with a 45-yard scoring strike. Mayton's kick was good, making 35-18 with 1:50 left. Patrician scored the final points of the game when Meeks scored on a 1-yard run with :16 left in the game to make the final tally 35- 24 in favor of the Gators. Clarke Prep's offense rolled up 524 yards in total offense with Becton leading the charge with 205 yards on 15 carries and a TD. Bradford had 71 yards on 15 carries with two TDs. Powell was 7-11 passing for 210 yards and two scores. Dickinson caught six passes for 199 yards and two scores. Meeks paced PA with 194 yards on 26 carries and four scores. The Gators (1-0) jump into region play this week as they host Faith Academy. Faith lost 53-40 to defending state champ Bessemer last Friday.
