Aggies lose to Gulf Shores in jamboree
Jackson loses 13-12 in defensive struggle
By Chris Sherman SA Sports Writer

Jackson and Gulf Shores met up Friday night in a preseason jamboree at Legion Field.

The Aggies lost 13-12 in a game in which the varsity played three quarters.

JHS built an early lead in the game when Damion Bracey picked off a pass from the Gulf Shores quarterback and sprinted 25 yards to pay-dirt. The PAT was no good and the Aggies led 6-0 at the half.

Although the Jackson defense played extremely well for all but two drives in the game the offense seemed to have some problems.

"The D (defense) did a pretty good job except those two drives late in the game where they (Gulf Shores) scored. They (defense) had to play with a short field all night because of the offense," Aggie offensive coordinator Jason Jones said.

"We used this as a learning experience but obviously when you play a game you would like to win," he added.

The coaches said several players stood out in the scrimmage including 10th-grade running back Damion Bracey, Todderick Leggett and wide receiver Cory Besteda.

Bracey picked up around 50 yards on the ground and picked off a pass in the second quarter and returned it for a touchdown. Andrew Ezell rushed for 74 yards and Cory Besteda hauled in over 100 yards through the air. Quarterback Broderick Washington passed for 130 yards.

The Aggies have now turned their focus to the "Battle of the Tombigbee" Thursday night in Leroy.

Jackson Coach John Blackmon will probably not be in attendance due to an family emergency. Offensive coordinator Jason Jones, offensive line coach Landon Hilt, defensive coordinator Tony Johnson and Bob Bumpers will handle the coaching duties. Jones and Hilt will call the plays while Johnson, Cedric Thatch and Bumbers run the defense.

Without Blackmon on the sidelines, you have to wonder what kind of effect it may have on the team.

"Anytime the head coach is not at a game it has an effect. The players really have to focus and realize they have a job to do. We have 17 seniors on this team and the other kids are looking at how they handle things," Jones said.

"I think it has brought our team together. They seem to be more focused. They really want to do this for Coach Blackmon. They have prepared and worked hard while he has been gone and they want him to see that," Landon Hilt said.

Jackson and Leroy will meet up tonight at Palmer Stadium in what will for sure be a packed house. This game is already intense enough and emotional enough with out anything extra added on. Coach Jones said motivating the kids this week will not be a problem.

"We shouldn't have to say anything this week to the kids just like Coach Powell will not have to at Leroy. Things should take care of themselves," Jones said.
