JPD officers undergo situation training
The officers took part in using the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) system, which some might describe as a large interactive video game. But, this is no game because it places officers in real life situations, requiring them to make decisions that can affect the outcome. The FATS system utilizes the latest computer technology combined with a large projection screen. Real life actors play out various situations on screen and officers must use their best judgment on whether or not to use their weapon. They can choose from four computer-controlled weapons, which include a semiautomatic pistol, shotgun, pepper spray or Tazer. JPD Training Officer Arvis Slack conducted the training for the department. He said officers are required to have decisionmaking training at least once a year. Jackson police officers have trained annually using the FATS system for several years.
The interactive system includes a number of scenarios, including traffic stops, domestic violence situations, bomb threats, bank robberies and home invasions. "This helps officers sharpen their skills in making the decision on whether or not to use force, and in some situations, deadly force," said Slack.
