Jackson native feels strongly about his patriotic duty
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Sgt. Eric Muhammad
Jackson native and Jackson High School graduate Sgt. Eric D. Muhammad believes his work as a drill sergeant for the U.S. Army is part of his patriotic duty.

Muhammad, who is the son of Mildred L. Beck, of Jackson and the late Eddie R. Beck, has served in the Army for approximately 13 years and began his duty as a drill sergeant for basic combat training (BCT) for new recruits last year. For nine-week periods he oversees the training of a platoon of 60 men in a company of 240.

During that time new recruits undergo physical, combat, rifle marksmanship and first aid training.

"In my experience, most new recruits have a good view of their high chance of being deployed to Iraq," said Muhammad. "They are very motivated to do something that will benefit our nation. This is a tough task and we should all be proud of them for being so willing to undertake it."

The sergeant served seven years as an active infantryman then got out. He re-enlisted following the events of 9-11-2001 because of his sense of duty to his country. "I wanted to give back to my nation," he said.

Muhammad serves in the 108th BCT Reserve Unit, serving nine weeks at at time. "I want to encourage everyone to support our troops and realize how important their service to our nation is," he said.

Muhammad and his wife Satya have three children, Abdulahi, 10, Aminah, 8 and Amadi, 7.
