Equipment operator cuts into bridge on 69
The cause of all the trouble occurred around 11 a.m. as an employee of Mobile Asphalt was using an asphalt saw to cut a line down the center of Highway 69 near the 17 mile marker, which was the first step in preparing the road for resurfacing. According to Larry Easley, a supervisor with the company, he had instructed the saw operator to stop within 100 feet of the Salitpa Creek bridge, but he failed to do so, making a 5-inch deep cut, 34-feet long, into the top concrete slab of the bridge. Such a cut immediately made the bridge unsafe for traffic and voided the weight restrictions for large trucks. The bridge was closed to all traffic. Tuesday morning, employees and engineers from Mobile Asphalt Company, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and Remedial Services, Inc. were at the bridge to survey the damage and decide how to proceed with repairs.
Mobile AsphalCompany is paying for tearing out the damaged section of the long bridge and replacing it. The damaged section will have to be torn out and new concrete poured. In the meantime the shortest route between Jackson and Coffeeville is County Road 3, which runs through the McVay and Winn communities. That road intersects with Highway 84 just west of Coffeeville and with Highway 43 just north of Jackson.
