Self-defense class for women offered by JPD Aug. 14-16 Jackson Police Officer Arvis Slack will teach a basic selfdefense course for women, free of charge, Aug. 14-16. The class is sponsored by the Jackson Police Department and will be taught in the department's new training room located inside the old Alabama Power building beside the newly constructed police station downtown. Each class will last from 6:30-9:30 p.m., and is targeting young women who may be going off to college. "We would like to teach these women how to defend themselves and remove themselves from attack situations," said Officer Slack, who taught a similar course last year prior to the holiday shopping season. "They will be in a new, strange environment and it is important that they know how to handle an attacker. This course is designed to be a confidence builder and teach these young ladies how to handle themselves in any situation." Jamie Few, who completed the first class taught by Slack, said she plans on taking this class as well. "It gave me a lot of confidence in being able to handle myself should I be attacked," she said. Class size is limited to 20, so those wishing to participate are encouraged to call Stephanie McIntosh at the Jackson Police Department (246-4484) to sign up as soon as possible. Participants will be required to sign a waiver due to the physical training involved. Slack went on to explain that the course teaches participants escape methods and how not to hang around and be a victim, as well as being more aware of their surroundings. The course is known as RAD, which stands for Rape Aggression Defense.
Once completing the class, participants are eligible to take the advanced version of the course anywhere in the country within one year of completing the basic course.
