Marijuana found by deputy at checkpoint
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Three Mt. Vernon residents were arrested Saturday, Aug. 4, and were being held in the Washington County Jail, Monday, on drug possession charges.

Reginald M. York, 23, Aldric D. Westry, 26, and Rodrick Reed, 24, were awaiting a bond hearing Monday, after spending the weekend in the Washington County Jail on charges of first degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The three were arrested around 8:45 p.m., Saturday at a driver's license checkpoint on Red Fox Road, conducted by Washington County Deputy Nick Reed.

According to Dep. Reed, when the men stopped at the checkpoint, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, driven by York. The officer said he was given consent to search the vehicle and found what appeared to be marijuana residue in the back seat.

Dep. Reed said he also found a small bag of marijuana on the ground beside the vehicle, which he believed was dropped by one of the passengers when he exited the automobile. He then noticed a small plastic bag containing some white pills, which he believed to be illegally obtained prescription drugs of some type, in the front passenger side of the vehicle.

The suspects were placed under arrest and put in Reed's patrol car. In a further search of the area surrounding the vehicle, Dep. Reed found a large plastic bag containing 17 small bags of marijuana, that appeared to have been kicked underneath the car in an attempt to hide it.

Reed added that the pills confiscated during the search would be sent to the state lab for testing to determine exactly what they are.
