Mark Your Calendar meeting The Clarke County DHR quarterly board meeting will be conducted Aug. 21 at 3:30 p.m. in the Clarke County DHR board room, 22609 Highway 84, Grove Hill. Lou J. Boykin is director. ADC meets Aug. 14 The Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC) monthly meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 14, 7 p.m. at the NAACP building on Carter Street in Grove Hill. SWAlabama Porcelain Artists Assn. meets Aug. 11 The first meeting of the Southwest Alabama Porcelain Artists Association will be Saturday, Aug. 11 at the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Jackson. Coffee and set up time will be at 10 a.m. with the meeting starting at 10:30. Officers will be installed at this initial meeting. Members who paid their WOCP dues in May will receive a free copy of Painting Dresden by Jayne Houston. Dues are $34 and include a subscription of the bimonthly magazine The China Painter. V.F.W. sponsors steak dinner Aug. 16 The V.F.W. is sponsoring another FREE steak dinner Thursday, Aug. 16, 6 p.m. at the V.F.W. building for all members and spouses. Diabetes class at Jackson Medical Center There will be diabetes classes presented at Jackson Medical Center will continue each consecutive Tuesday during the month of July at 6:30 each evening. Alabama Career Center has extended hours The Alabama Career Center located at 3090 Highway 43 South, Jackson, Alabama has extended office hours to better serve the public. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for your convenience. Clarke Prep Open House Aug. 9 Clarke Prep School will have an open house on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 6-8 p.m. The new headmaster, David Walker, and the new teachers joining the Clarke Prep staff will be available to greet students and parents. Sam and Sarah Todd Memorial Golf Tournament The 6th Annual Sam and Sarah Todd Memorial Golf Tournament will be Aug. 11 at Deer Field Golf Course in Chatom. Tee time will be 8 a.m. and the format will be a two-man medal play. Entry fee is $75 per player with a deadline of July 30 for registration. Lunch will be provided. Sponsor/entry fees are: Corporate sponsors, $450, plaque and four players, ad billboard; Hole sponsors, $250, ad at hole and two players. Prizes include 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies, stereos, televisions and more. There will also be a $30,000 hole in one award. Douglas to speak to SWAIA on BOE activities The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will hold a public meeting Tuesday, Aug. 21, 7 p.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse. The Rev. T.L. Douglas, Clarke County Board of Education, District 4, will be the guest speaker. He will give an update on BOE activities. A question and answer period will follow. Men's softball tournament Aug. 25 A men's softball tournament will be conducted Aug. 25 at the North Jackson Softball Complex next to New Era. Entry fee is $125 per team, plus two balls - 12", .47 core. This event will be a double elimination with championship T-shirts. Parden family reunion Sept. 1 The Parden family reunion will be Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Bethel Baptist Church fellowship hall in Coffeeville. Quilt show at 20th annual Pecan Festival The Perry County Historical Society in conjunction with the Mississippi Pecan Festival is taking applications for the Quilt Show for this year's festival. The festival will be Sept. 28-30 in Richton, Miss. There will be six categories with prize ribbons and a $100 prize overall winner. Categories are: handmade bed quilts, wallhangings, juvenile quilts, kits, antique quilts and machine quilted quilts.
