Judge DuBose asks for extra security at court
By Barry H. Hendrix

Circuit Judge Stuart DuBose asked the Clarke County Commission Tuesday for aid in the security of his office and courtroom in the new annex at the county courthouse. The judge addressed the commission at the end of Tuesday's meeting. His appearance was not on the meeting agenda.

"I've come today before you to ask that you consider providing me and my circuit court with a security guard," he said. "There is a substantial need. The public will be benefited in a material and substantial way when we have jury court.

"It is my intention, in my court, to ensure the privacy of jurors….In the pursuit of that assurance, there will be no electronic devices of any sort allowed in my courtroom. It will take a security guard to enforce that requirement. Cell phones, laptops, other electronic devices that are used to make and detonate bombs, and I don't intend for that to happen in my courtroom.

"My office has been burglarized, at least, to the extent of my judicial assistant, whose office you must pass through to get to mine," DuBose said.

Ruth Moseley, the judge's secretary, reported a burglary July 11 to the sheriff's department.

"The most recent occurrence is the second time that this (burglary) has happened. It was the only time that it was reported to the sheriff's department. The first event having not been reported other than to the current security guard, who did not make an incident report and who did not had indeed been burglarized along with the Cash Advance next door. That business had been burglarized Wednesday, July 18, at which time an undetermined amount of cash was stolen. During that incident the wires to the alarm had been cut prior to the burglars gaining entrance through the rear door of the business. The theft of a four-wheeler key was also reported at LA Powersports, which is located on U.S. Highway 43 just north of the city limits.

Investigator Richard Harvey said it has not been determined whether that and the burglaries which occurred over the weekend are related to the Cash Advance burglary.

A bag of cash, believed to have been tossed during the early Sunday morning pursuit, was found by a citizen later that day and turned into police.

Similar burglaries, which occurred in Thomasville, Saturday, are believed to have been committed by the suspects. There the Altell, Rite Aid and Check Express were burglarized and it was discovered that the Oldsmobile was stolen from the Check Express. "The Mobile Police Department is also interested in talking with the two suspects, who they believe may be involved in several unsolved burglaries there," said Chief Burge.

A small amount of marijuana was also found in the suspects' possession, resulting in a possession charge, to go along with the four counts of third degree burglary they are now facing. The subject, whom officers were originally in pursuit of has not yet been located.

"Sgt. Garrett and his shift tend to check the small things, which in police work often turn out to be larger things, such as was the case Sunday," said Chief Burge. "They are a hard working shift and do an outstanding job. This is one of the largest recoveries of stolen property in Jackson in recent years and they are to be commended for their efforts." report it to the sheriff, and who is best suited to remain where he is serving in a security capacity for the district court."

None of the commissioners had questions nor made any comments on the judge's request.
